An Architect's Garden: Interiors

As promised, here are some interior shots from "An Architect's Garden," which we visited last weekend. We were surprised to learn that the house was open, and a little hesitant to walk into someone else's home. At first I felt strange about taking pictures, but I soon got over that. :)

I wish I could describe for you the feeling of walking into this home... the soaring ceilings, the faded leather chairs, the pieces of architectural salvage, the mirrors and prints leaning casually against a wall, the huge dried flowers arrangements... it was almost like stumbling upon a barn filled with a cache of antiques and faded flowers. Strange and wonderful and totally unique.

There were two fireplaces at either end of this great room, which had a dining table at one end (shown in the first photo) and a living area at the other end (shown above). As you can see the entire room was a treasure trove of architectural salvage and faded antiques. We later learned that the owners have a design business, and many of the pieces in the house are for sale.

Another view of the living room (above) shows the owner's wonderful collection of architectural salvage, including columns, statues, and light fixtures (bottom left of the photo above).

The garden is ever present and easily viewed from within the home because of the many windows and french doors.

The room above is a hallway that runs the width of the house, separating the great room from the kitchen. Sadly, I did not get any photos of the kitchen, but I think you can see some on the owner's design website. I'll give you a link at the end of this post.

Here is another view of the great room. I think it gives you a better idea of all the diverse treasures so casually displayed.

OK, I know some of you are going to say "hay in a garden urn as a side table?!" Perhaps not the most practical of design ideas, but somehow it just seemed perfect here... Now do you see what I meant when I said "strange and wonderful?"

I've still got some more of the garden and conservatory to show you next week. In the meantime, here is the owner's design website, Tendenze Design.

I'm linking this post to Cindy's Show & Tell Friday. Thanks so much, Cindy, for being such a gracious hostess. :)

  2. Oh my. Oh my goodness. It certainly lives up to the exterior doesn't it? What an amazing place. I can't say that I looks practical, more like a place to play with design, but what place does practicality have in our dreams? I could dream myself right into that house any day:>) Thank you for sharing this with us Mary! It's wonderful!

  4. Hello Mary, now that was the most interesting home interior I think I have ever seen. Not sure I'd want it for myself as it's so huge but boy do I love the architecture! I especially love the exterior of this home. Thank you for taking us along with you....have a wonderful weekend. Maura :)

  5. Another interesting walk through history Mary. Thanks for taking us along. I wonder who might have been around that table and what they might have discussed over dinner. It could be the setting in a novel...

  8. Wow! Amazing place! I am in love with that huge tapestry above the fireplace and I love the floral garland that accents both the fireplace and the tapestry. They have some really unique and large pieces, but the space is so big, it looks perfect! I love the wood floors too!

  10. Mary thanks so much for showing us this. The interior is very interesting. Now what I expected. It's very loft-like. Huge open spaces made habitable. Very cool kitchen, I went to the web site. It's all very interesting, but I don't think I could live there. It's not quite snuggly enough for me. Just like I couldn't live in a contemporary environment. But thankfully, life is full of choices. Again, thanks so much for sharing it with us.

Hope to see you on "Summer Sundays".

  11. If I'm being completely honest, and don't hold this against me Mary, I love the house but the decor leaves me cold. I'm not even sure if I can put it into words. Worn out, messy, disarray ... I guess those are a few of them. I don't do well with a lot of clutter. Organization and a sense of warmth are more my style.

But of course the home owners probably love it just the way it is. And they should! Everyone has different tastes when it comes to decorating. No one will be touring my home anytime soon, if that tells you anything. LOL!

  12. Oh my! How lovely. I couldn't live here but I am so enjoying the view. I would have to straighten things up. Isn't that sad... that I couldn't enjoy it the way it is now? I love the floors though.

  14. Sharon, I think perhaps the owners had styled it just for the open house -- with lots of pieces displayed for sale. I'm not sure I could live there either, but it was nevertheless a strange, wonderful and bemusing discovery to wander through... I think it got my thrifting/antiquing juices flowing... lol

  16. WOW. I would like to see it on a daily basis but I have a feeling it would not be too different. It's like a shop I want to stroll through for a couple of hours.
    Love it.

  17. Hi Mary, thank you for showing us the interior of the building. It doesn't look very homely to me. I love the furniture and tapestry. I love old windows and doors and there were plenty there to interest me. Thank you for sharing. Have a great weekend! Jackie in UK.

  20. This is definitely a wowzer! I've never seen anything like it - except in my dreams. Do you ever have that dream where you suddenly live in a huge and gorgeous house that has everything you ever hope to find. I, then, usually dream that I'm exploring (asleep dream - I'm talking about) and find music rooms with huge pianos and concert harps and violins and there's usually an attic with all kinds of good stuff in it. Ahhh, I love that dream and this is JUST like it!

Have you figured out how to upload dreams, then?!

Thanks for sharing all of this. Both Tom and I had quite a fun time, last night, looking at all these wonderful photos!

    Love, Katy

Oh! You know, I can just see you living in a little farmhouse in Vermont - it fits!

  25. I think it's fabulous! A little larger than life and I love it! It reminds me of the home of a neighbor that always fascinated me when I was a little girl, huge and full of secret places!
