I Love My Thrift Store
I have a bit of a confession to make -- three days before Christmas, when I had a hundred things to do, I was visiting the thrift store.
At this time of year, I always feel slightly guilty about buying anything for myself. Christmas is about giving, after all. But when you get an email announcing a huge sale at your favorite thrift store, what's a girl to do?
Now, this is a terrific thrift store -- it's in a very well-to-do neighborhood, full of "old money" families. And the thrift store benefits a school for special needs children, so I don't feel too bad about spending a lot of money there. And thrifting is part of the new push to go green, right? So really, if you think about it, I'm giving to charity and saving the earth!
And, of course, getting some really nice stuff dirt cheap. :)
So anyway, the sale was 50% off all items, and 75% off all Christmas items. Who could pass up something like that? Even if it was three days before Christmas!
The lamp in the picture at the top of the post was originally $20. I got it for $10. Here is a closeup, above. I'm a sucker for anything with flowers on it, so I just love this. I do need to rewire it, though, and get a shade for it.
This plate was originally $12.; got it for $6. Pressed glass candy dish -- $2.50. The tiny pitcher below -- 25 cents.
I love my thrift store.
Tomorrow I'll show you the tole tray I also bought. If you haven't already done so, don't forget to leave a comment on my giveaway post -- Saturday, December 22nd. The drawing will be held this coming Saturday, December 29th.
Your thrift shop has items like none I have seen before. Ours has junk, junk and more junk, and if you are lucky, you find a treasure in between. I never do as a friend's DH gets to them all. LOL! He goes every morning to check things out and finds some buried treasure once in a while. I don't have the stamina to go often enough so I never go anymore. All your new finds are real treasures and I hope you enjoy them. It is so nice that they will have a home where they are appreciated too.

Hi Mary,
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with taking a break from all the prep for Christmas. Glad you did, what great finds. That little pincecone pitcher is adorable. Enjoy the day. Wish I could find some thrift stores like yours. Hope you had a good Christmas.
Janie
Good morning Mary,
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is the adorable pitcher with the pine cone on it. After my love of acorn adorned objects come pine cone adorned objects.

This post makes me want to whine really really loudly - How come I don't have an old money thrift store that supports a school in my neighborhood? How come? No fair!
ReplyDeleteMary,
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful finds! Please don't feel guilty I did the same thing! We have a new thrift store in our area, and I just discovered it. It benefits Lupus.May I ask where abouts the store is located? I also live in NJ, and I hope it is close enough for me to visit! Could you please e-mail me? dustbun55@aol.com. Who knows we may be right around the corner from each other. thanks so much, and have a wonderful New year!!
Just glorious finds! I so want to visit YOUR shop!! I never find anything this beautiful. I am in love with the sweet little pitcher!

Everything is wonderful but I specially like the dear little pitcher! I can't wait to see the tole tray you got. ~Adrienne~
ReplyDeleteI find nothing wrong with a little "Merry Christmas to me" gift, especially when you shop for yourself in the thrift store! You got great things at great prices, I love the dish and the cut glass compote:>)
ReplyDeleteNo need to confess, I think we all understand and just wishing that there was time before Christmas. As everyone is heading to the mall for after Christmas sales I will be heading to an auction and a flea market. I love your finds. I have a lamp and a vase very similar to your lamp. I love tole, so I am looking forward to seeing your tray.

Hi Mary. I love thrift shops too! When we lived near Philadelphia there were some great ones, the old money kind too. I loved it! Nothing like getting a bargain! You got some great stuff and it's okay to buy things for yyourself. Good for you! Rhondi
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, I was doing the exact same thing! I'm twitching over here...did you say tole tray? I'm having to take deep breaths but I cannot wait to see your find!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Dena
Thrifting is one of my favorite hobbies. It's the thrill of the hunt. You've got some great treasures there, especially that little pitcher! As a matter of fact I collect little cream pitchers. I call them "orphan pitchers" because most often the sugar bowl and been broken or lost.
ReplyDeleteAs my best friend says "we all have to do our part to help out the economy" at least that's the argument she gives her husband! Works for me too!!!! Wonderful thrift finds, think I will have to go thrifting tomorrow after hair appt.
ReplyDeleteOh, tonight when I took all my Christmas stuff down, I left a spot for the transferware plate (ha)

Girl you did great! I love that pitcher for .25 omg can't get gum for that.
ReplyDeleteWhat great finds. Thanks for sharing them.
ReplyDeleteNan
Great shop. WIsh I lived near you!
ReplyDeleteBarbara
I don't blame you for loving your things...I love them too!! Esp. the lil pitcher!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Robin
Oh I just love your little bitty pine cone pitcher! Both sets of grandparents would make pine cone wreaths, and one grandmother would pay us a penny for each one we picked up at the park by the Chesapeake Bay - but they had to be nice ones! Memories can be so nice, can't they?
ReplyDeleteI agree with heidi - the thrift stores I find in my corner of the southwest Houston area have nothing but trashy junk. The only other alternative is the overpriced ones. Same thing with garage sales & flea markets around here. But that's okay, I don't mind looking at someone else's treasures! Leslie
Mary,
ReplyDeleteTerrific finds....I love thrift stores....so many blessings to glean....
Congratulations on your blogging anniversary....I'm sorry I missed commenting last Saturday...we were out of town visiting church members in the hospital....I'll try to comment on your 200th one! Betty @ Country Charm
I too love thrift stores, and your purchases are just lovely. And it is nice to know that you have given to charity and saved the earth at the same time! Well done.
ReplyDeleteI too was in the thrift store a few days before Christmas...just some retail therapy of my own kind! (I hate the malls) Looks like you got some great deals! The one I visit is run by hospice so I always tell myself I'm supporting a wonderful organization!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
I absolutely adore that little pitcher. First of all I have a thing for pitchers and secondly, I love things with pine cones. I took a quick peek at your blog before bed last night and spotted the pitcher. This morning when I had more time to read, I was amazed at what you got it for! WOW! Like the others have said, I too want a thrift shop like that in my area! Great finds, Mary!
ReplyDeleteSuch sweet cuteness! Loving the pinecone creamer!!! It screams cabin-ish!
ReplyDeletexo
I live in an upper-class area where people buy lots, throw away soon and would never be caught wearing something un-branded. It is a great place to shop for discarded items that are still just fine. These are the places to go for good thrifting :)
