No, I have not been traveling in Spain, or even in California or Florida. Believe it or not, this garden is about two or three miles down the road from my house in New Jersey. It was originally designed for the family of mining industrialist Evander Schley, by the famed landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman in 1926. It has been restored by the firm of Statile & Todd, Inc. as a part of the designer showhouse and gardens, Mansion In May, to benefit Morristown Memorial Hospital. Here are some more views:
So beautiful and exotic. The Spanish style was very big in the 1920's and there are some examples here in the Chicago area too. My great uncle owned an estate very similar to this one. It was built in Baltimore by silent film star Francis X. Bushmann. The detail of these houses are phenomenal. Unfortunately, the Bushmann estate was plowed under to make way for a superhighway.
Lovely images Mary. Have you ever visited the blog, My Marakkesh? If you look on my sidebar there's a link. She and her husband are Americans who are opening a guest house in Marakkesh.
Remember last fall they had an estate sale there? Hannah and I stopped in there to have a look but did not buy anything. The designers certainly have done a wonderful job renovating it!
I've never been a big fan of Spanish style, but this is absolutly beautiful! Your photo skills are very enviable, makes me want to take a class. Thanks for sharing your little piece of the world.
That's a really unexpected gem! I would have had no idea that it is in New Jersey. I would even have guessed Europe! That tiled fountain is beautiful. All of it is just incredibly lovely! I love the gate too.
Hey! i DO live in california, but i prefer your library and the view from the couch to the "done" (but lovely) spanish garden in n.j.!! please don't sell your efforts short! and i am thrilled for you that the g.f. visit went well. makes life so easy that way!! jkj
I love where you live. So many historic homes and your villiage is just wonderful..not to mention your beautiful home. It's amazing to have so much so near. Thanks for sharing and hope you get your computer woes sorted out. From the foothills of the Sierra's!
