Oh, deer!

First of all, I apologize for the quality of these photos. It was getting dark outside and I had to really crank up the ISO so they are really grainy. But I wanted to show you our resident deer, or at least one of them.

It all started when my daughter spied a three-legged deer on the front lawn. She felt so sorry for it, so asked me if she could throw out some stale bread from our kitchen.

In another week or so, the three-legged deer appeared with two fawns (one of which is shown here), and my daughter was asking for my credit card so she could go to the supermarket and buy bread for the deer.

Now they wait for her to get home from work and she feeds them from the front steps.

What is wrong with this picture? ;)

Edited to add: My daughter will be going to college next week, so the gravy train will be over for these critters. They look upon my garden as their own personal salad bar, so I'm not crazy about them although I have to say that they are beautiful creatures.

  2. Mary, what a special treat for all of you...a blessing. I wonder if they lost their momma; it's unusual that these little babes would be away from her.

What's going on with those back legs on the last pic??

  5. Heather, their mother is still around, just not in these pics.

Alison, I think it was getting ready to turn and run, so it's legs are a little splayed...

  8. Something is surely going on. We lived in an area once where there were deer everywhere, but when we tried to approach they always ran away. A wonderful post for the day. Blessings

  9. There are so many deer this year in B.C. and they have gotten very aggressive. There is a video clip they showed on the news of one attacking a family dog beating badly with its hooves while the dog owners screamed in horror. Make sure she is careful not to get between the babies and their momma even if she only has 3 legs.

  11. Very cute! I'm amazed they are so tame.
You might also like to put out apples; deer love apples!
And in fall, they like to eat pumpkin flesh, but only when the pumpkins get frozen. They don't seem to like to eat pumpkins unless the flesh is frozen. We'll see them in the pumpkin fields come November, busting open leftover pumpkins with their hooves and eating away.

  17. I agree with anonymous. Letttuce and apples are favorites but yeast and wheat are not part of their "normal" diet. What a special treat for your daughter to have this encounter, but don't let it continue too long or your whole property will be over run and de-forested overnight. Bramble

  18. Oh wow! You're going to go broke. I believe that deer don't ordinarily eat refined grains. Ha! So cute, Mary. Glad that you were able to capture them.

  19. These are adorable pictures! We have deer come to the backyard too but they run away when they see us come. I wish we could tame them just like this cause I would never harm them...Christine

  20. Oh come on Mary....look at those big eyes! Are you really not going to feed them?
In these parts the farmers and/or gardeners put out special salt blocks for the deer and it seems to help keep them from the plants.

  21. I am so surprised to see the babies away from mama?! And that is so scary that they are depending on getting some bread....hmmm just can't resist them though, although you should LOL!

  25. They are such exquisite creatures, yes. Especially the fawns.

  26. Oh, so cute. You can't stop feeding them now! Maybe just some white bread in a basket on the steps???

  27. Oh my gosh! Look at those big liquid eyes! How can you not chop up your garden and feed it to them by hand when you see a face like that?! Lol, ok, that might be extreme, but I love watching deer and if I had some that ate out fo my hand I would be on that porch promptly every night at dinner time!

  28. That is probably one of my very most favorite songs...besides my Gospel music.

And oh my GOSH...the EYES on that fawn...HOW HUGE are they ?
Their mommy only has three legs...??? How unsual....do you think her leg was caught in a trap ?
It is going to be hard to break them of the habit of being hand fed...it's not good for them to trust humans like THAT.... most of the time.

Yes, deer can be very distructive at times.

  30. Absolutely wonderful - your daughter's compassion and these beautiful creatures.

  31. Did they leave your garden alone, when the food was offered. I think they are cute, and love the sight of them, but hate them for what they put us gardners through the extra expense to deter their foagaing habit. I wish we could be kinder with another system for the creatures. And maintain our freedom in gardening efforts.

  32. They are adorable and have been getting by on their big brown eyes for a long time:)If only they didn't eat every thing in sight! It is amazing how trusting of your daughter they are!

  33. So sweet! And empty nest next week? sigh. I know that feeling...I'd be out there feeding that baby!

  37. This post just grabbed my heart. Your daughter is a wonderful animal lover. We have infringed on their (and mother nature's)land and they don't have the abundance of food in the wild anymore. Bless your daughter's heart!

  38. Cute, yes. But unfortunately this is not good for the deer. They have very delicate systems and if they fill up on bread they will not eat the proper nutrients they need for energy. Plus I'm not sure it is a good idea to have them so unafraid to approach humans. They are so cute and it is so tempting to do this (and I'm sure I'd be tempted too), but it is not good for the animals.

  39. I'm with you Mary...next thing you know they'll want to move in LOL

Too cute...your daughter has a wonderful heart !!!
