My first experience with an online presence was at HGTV's Rate My Space. I remember posting my dining room under the title "I Love a Red Dining Room." And I was just the tiniest bit upset when someone (anonymously, of course) trashed it, saying that I should go get a subscription to Veranda.
Well, bloggers are so much sweeter and have much better manners. I have to explain, for those of you who may not know it, that this is my family home. My parents built it in 1959. In fact, my father actually built much of it with his own hands. And my mother lovingly decorated it, including the red wallpaper that still hangs in the dining room. I must say that I'm getting the urge to change it, but I'm almost certain that it won't be happening any time soon. In the meantime, I'm happy filling it with collections of tole trays, red transferware, and milk glass.

I love a red dining room or a red kitchen! It's beautiful with the color of wood in the furniture and all of the wonderful china and decorations! Lovely...classically beautiful! ♥
ReplyDeleteyour house always ooses charm and warmth and love. A beautiful sanctuary.
ReplyDeleteand yes - classically beautiful.
Beautiful Mary, so warm and cozy.
ReplyDeleteI think the red is charming - and the addition of the transferware and milk glass is perfect.
ReplyDeleteYour home looks so cozy, Mary. I have to say I get tired of all the "white" out there. I'm all for color. Just linked up my Antique French Buttons that I found at Amvets this week. Thanks for hosting and for the opportunity to showcase our interests and treasures.

I love your red dining room and the transferware! Be still my heart! :D :D
ReplyDeleteYou have a beautiful dining room Mary. I just love all the red transferware and how you have displayed it. V
ReplyDeleteThe red dining room has a beautiful character. Love it.
ReplyDeleteI like your dining room - Very Pretty! I am a firm believer - It is your home, you live there, decorate the way you want. Those that feel so freely to sit out there and criticize others are not living in your home. Not everyone likes the same things - thank goodness, or it would be a very boring world.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoyed the weekend.
I think it is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love the reds in your dining room.
ReplyDeleteMary,
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize your home was your parents. It is charming and lovely with it's colors.
I love it! Thank you for hosting!
Sherry
Mary, your home is beautiful and I know how special all your memories are because it was once your parent's house.
ReplyDeleteI still live on the same block in Brooklyn that I grew up on---my parent's house is five homes away from mine. Living so close to home has given me some wonderful memories. Sadly, I am in the process of emptying my Mom's house to get it ready to put it on the market. It will be hard to say another goodbye.
I so love your red dishes. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYellow Silk Top
The red design is very beautiful w/ the wood! =)
ReplyDeleteHi Mary
ReplyDeleteYou have kept, and added more red to your house which only makes it that much cosier. True, red may not be for everyone but when it's used tastefully, it's very appealing.

Mary,
ReplyDeleteYour home is lovely! I never put much interest in Rate My Space the few times I viewed it on HGTV. How precious it is that your family built your sweet home. Even more precious that you so lovingly and freely share it with us! I love the red!
Fondly,
Pat
Mary, My post today is not a mosaic but will you please read it and let me know if I can show it. I am going right now and try to create a mosaic so it meets the criteria. Please take a look in case I am not successful. Ginger
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your dining room! I love the red, the dark wood and the beautiful red and white dishes! I think it's wonderful that you live in the home your parents built. Have a blessed week! Pamela
ReplyDeleteLove your cabinet Mary! The red and white is great...
ReplyDeleteSo inviting. I think it's beautiful. Hugs, Deb
ReplyDeleteand, of course, we all genuinely love your home, too! (or we wouldn't all be here! ;)) There's a whole army of us who do, I'll bet. But, what's really lovely is that not only is it a beautiful and rich room but, also, the way you capture it with your images. That depth of style that's all yours - a trace of inky black but bright and peaceful at the same time. I always aspire...
ReplyDeleteOh, btw, Mary! Did you know that I've been, actually, banging away with some interior shots? I might just, actually, finally get them up on the blog (along with some photos of my garden....) I just can tell that they're so much better than what went before, a year ago. It's really not a big deal but, you remember...=]
Love,
Me xo
Mary, before I read the first word to your post and looked at the first picture I was just floored at how beautiful your dining room is. The room with its beams, the red wallpaper, the furniture and the transferware is a Veranda cover story! It is absolutely beautiful. After reading how it's your family home just made it all the more lovely. Your hutch is just gorgeous and the patterns are fabulous on the plates. The toile trays are perfect on the wall. Just stunning………..

P.S. A few people were so honored that you stopped by Focusing On LIfe. Everyone admires who you are and your photography. You are so very special.
I love your red dining-room! Great pictures!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week,

I haven't heard anything nice about anyone on Rate My Space - I think everyone on there is nasty for no reason at all.
ReplyDeleteYour dining room looks like home and I love all your red dishes.
Hi Mary,
ReplyDeleteI love your mosaics. Beautiful. The red transferware is beautiful. I just started to collect Pink Willow. And I posted a mosaic of my cabinet filled with More Pink and White. Have a great week

Beautiful Mary! So wonderful to live in a house that your dad built. I love your red transferware. I can't believe that people leave rude comments like that. Didn't their mothers teach them, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" Thanks for hosting.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Jann
Your hutch looks BEAUTIFUL! Just became a follower and linked up!
ReplyDeleteMorning Mary, your dining room is wonderful and knowing that your parents built and decorated the house is so very special and to be proud of!!. Have a good week and thank you for hosting Mosaic Monday.Jackie in Surrey, UK.xx
ReplyDeleteI love your porcelains...They look amazing! Your house looks amazing.Congatulations for the excellent choices!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's a lovingly kept, warm, traditional family room. And I like it for all the feelings it stears in you. Your Phaethon red tranferware cought my eye. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteI love red so I have nothing but good things to say about your lovely red dining room! It's beautiful and it's even better that it is your family home and holds so many memories. I would love to have your red transfer ware too!
ReplyDeleteI love everything about your dining room, but especially the colour. I imagine that it must be a wonderful place to enjoy a meal and conversation. The decoration is warm and interesting - now there's a perfect combination!
ReplyDeleteHow right you are about some folks manners. I love how every you love it. Even if I did not like it I would keep it to myself. I do like it very much. How wonderful to live in my family home. I hope someday one of our children will decide to choose our home for theirs.

I think your dining room is stunning, I would love one just the same as red is my favourite colour. I am joining Mosaic Monday for the first time this year. Just getting back into blogging after an extended break!
ReplyDeleteI adore your dining room. It is the warmest, coziest of spots. And, as much as I can appreciate white and the tendency for many to go in that direction, it is always color that I return to...rich, elegant, cozy color.
ReplyDeleteHi Mary,
ReplyDeleteI love the cosiness of your red ding room and I love the red and white transferware too!
Thank you for hosting,
Carolyn
Mary, Your dining room and dishes made me swoon...just gorgeous! The pictures of the room really are beautiful, but your pictures are always amazing!
ReplyDelete♥, Susan
I can't believe someone trashed your dining room! Sometimes the guise of being online make people so much bolder than they normally would be. I think your dining room is lovely, Mary. I'm a huge fan of transferware and wish I could afford more of it. Btw, the house we live in used to belong to my in-laws. I must confess about the only thing left of their decor is the kitchen floor and a couple bathroom sinks. Someday those will go too.
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a wonderful day with the warmer temperatures!
Sharon
What would Monday be without "Mosaic Monday"?? I enjoy it so much!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting.

Mary, I think the dining room is full of warmth with the red colours and it looks so placed together nicely, from the wallpaper, to the fine china. It is so important to hold on to those beautiul memories handed down, when we can and then add our own special touch. Have a wonderful week and thank you for hosting Mosaic Monday~
ReplyDeleteMary, I have enjoyed your beautiful blog for five years now. I now have my own blog and I am one of your newest followers. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home.
ReplyDelete~Clara
its such a beautiful room and and so wonderful for the house to of been in your family all these years, I have really enjoyed looking at you blog and will be following it from now on, thank you for you visit to my blog~ Tamzin
ReplyDeleteRed Transferware!!!.....it is lovely Mary....smiles
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you are enjoying your red dining room. How nice that you are in your family home and still enjoying your mother's color scheme. It must remind you of her.
ReplyDeleteI was going to say that you have the room of my dreams! My current house is too open to have a red dining room and it makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteI have read about so many people who were so rudely slammed on Rate My Space. I rarely look at it any more but I can understand how one would have their feelings hurt. I love your red dining room and would love to have one myself someday! I never tire of them!
ReplyDeleteI love your red dining room! It exudes an old fashioned charm missing in so many homes today! That your parents built your home has to mean so much. I wanted so badly to move my late in-law's old stone home onto country property, but it didn't work out and that charming old home with arched doorways, crystal doorknobs (which someone stole when the house was vacant), and solid oak floors was torn down for a parking lot! We were able to dig up the flagstones and daffodils for replanting at our home.
ReplyDeletePooooh on those who don't like your red dining room!
ReplyDelete"Auntie" sezzzzzzzzzzzzz...
:-)
I love Red myself. So I had to bounce over here, when I saw the name of your blog... Little Red House.
