Mosaic Monday: After the Storm

First of all, thank you all for your kind words of concern.  Your messages were a bright spot in my days!  We weathered the storm very well, although sadly that was not the case for many in parts of New Jersey and New York state, as well as others across the eastern seaboard.  I think Sandy will be remembered for many years to come.

I've got a set of autumn images here today, taken a few years ago on one of those magical mornings where the sun tries to break through the mist.  I've made them up into twelve 5x7 calendar pages.  The calendars are available in my etsy shop.  I'd also love to give away one calendar free, so leave a comment on this post and I'll have a drawing, winner to be announced next week.  :)

I wondered if I should make this post about the storm.  I did actually take some photos of the destruction here.  But in the end, I couldn't bring myself to post them.  It's just so sad to see the large number of beautiful old trees uprooted and broken.  Some people in my town are still without power, a full two weeks after the storm.  And we are the lucky ones.  So many people have nothing.

Thank you again for your well wishes and good thoughts and prayers.  They are so greatly appreciated.  And thank you, too, to all members of our armed services and their families on this Veteran's Day.  I am in awe of your selfless service to our country.

  2. what a gorgeous calender you have created Mary! I love every image. Such gorgeous light - I remember several years ago when we rented a little country cottage for a weekend, tramping across the paddocks in my pyjamas to take photos in the magic misty early morning light - so I understand the magic of it. And loving the gift of photography to try and capture it.
I am glad you have weathered the storm fairly well. I have been watching the reports on the TV - such destruction I can hardly imagine.
We had Remembrance Day here yesterday, 11th November - and yes a special day to remember those who fought and died for our freedom.
Take care, and have a wonderful week.

  4. Your calendar photos are gorgeous, Mary, full of the light that you capture so well. I'm glad you now have power, and we continue to remember those who have lost so much.
Today was Remembrance Day, celebrated in church with readings, music and of course, silence. We must never forget.

  5. I'm so glad to see you here tonight and know that you and your family are safe. I was wondering if you would share photos but I understand....I know it is hard to see the images. I continue to pray for everyone affected by the storm. Happy Monday my friend!

  7. Your calendar is gorgeous, Mary! It will be a joyful thing to look at for one lucky winner all year long!

The hurricane was so devastating. We had friends that lost their homes in Breezy Point and the Rockways, and I have been volunteering at Gerritsen beach in Brooklyn to help those who lost their homes to the flood waters that went 12 feet high. The company my husband works for in Lower manhattan has been flooded out of their building with no hopes to return for months as so much damage was done. It is a hard time for many but I know they will persevere, and get through this with hard work and the grace of God.

  8. So glad to see you post tonight! Not just for the weekly event, you are so very kind to host each week, but most importantly to know you and your family are doing well and "surviving the storm". I just cannot imagine. :(

  12. The light in your photographs is gorgeous! It reminded me of the feature I saw on CBS Sunday Morning today about a photographer taking day/night photographs of NYC. Amazing! Here's the video link: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50134920n&tag=showDoorFlexGridRight;flexGridModule

  16. Mary the calendar pages are incredible!

A friend/classmate, who lives near Joplin and is an admirer of my photography efforts, told me he thought I could capture the devastation in Joplin, last year. I never got there. My children have been there, since the storm and others in our family went to help, after the storm.. We are about 5 hours away, since we are in northeast MO and Joplin is in the southwest area of our state. I'm not sure I would have been able to do Joplin justice with my lens and I'm sure I would have considered a long time about using them on my blog, so I understand. Joplin is rebuilding.
My prayers remain with all those affected by Sandy. I know you will rebuild, too.

  19. Hi Mary; thank you for hosting. Glad your power is back.

For those of us on the West Coast who don't see all the devastation of the hurricane, could you occasionally write a little bit how the clean up and repairs and replacements are going, just a line or two now and then would be appreciated as time goes on.

    Take care of yourself.

  26. I am so thankful you all weathered the storm without a lot of damage. My heart continues to break for all who are still suffering so much. Now it is being said that this storm was second to Katrina in the wrath it dropped on the people of our country. Your calendar is beautiful and a beacon of light and hope at a time like this. Take care. genie
