Rainy Day Thoughts

Do you ever have one of those days when you can't think straight? When thoughts just seem to flit in and out of your head like seeds scattered to the wind? That is how I feel today.

Yesterday was beautiful and sunny -- a real treat. Today, it's dreary, dreary, dreary -- raining since before dawn. I know that the rain will bring with it a green and beautiful spring, but I still miss the sun. And I can't seem to focus on getting anything done.

Oh, I've got the usual chores to do. I'll be doing laundry (my favorite chore) and vacuuming (my least favorite chore). But instead of taking a walk in the sunshine this morning to drink in the sights of the unfolding seasons, I will spend some time straightening up my desktops -- digital and analog -- and wandering through my photo archives.

Do you write letters anymore? Or keep a journal -- a handwritten one? Those were my thoughts when I came across this photo I took recently. I make my own photo notecards (note to self: put a few in my etsy shop) and I wondered if anyone still cares about penmanship... I went to a Catholic school, where good penmanship was expected of every student. If the nuns could see my writing now, I'm afraid they would be very disappointed. :)

And so, this is my rainy day -- tea and chores and disjointed thoughts. I don't know if I've ever told you this, but I'm a bit of a cable news junkie. I check in throughout the day to keep up with what is going on in the world. Lately, the news from Japan has been so very sad. My thoughts and prayers are with all those people, who just seem to face one tragedy after another. Do you think that there is some sort of, oh... force (for want of a better word) that binds us all together? So that when so many souls halfway across the world are bleeding, we feel their pain?

Just another rainy day thought... Japan, I hold you in my heart today.

  3. yvonne, I use playlist.com. You sign up (it's free), choose one song or many, and copy the html code for Blogger. Then, at the top of your blog, click on "Design." Click on "Add a Gadget" in your sidebar, and choose "HTML/Java Script." Paste your playlist code in and save. You can then drag your player to any spot on your sidebar.

    Hope this helps. :)

  4. Isn't it strange how much the weather can affect our mood.
Dreary here in Normandy too today after some delightful spring weather.
So this morning I baked comforting chocolate & cranberry muffins and the afternoon will be spent sitting by the fire reading a new book, The Various Flavours Of Coffee.

  5. Mary,

Beautiful photography. I am feeling this "mood" for lack of a better word. The news just overwhelms me...I am making cookies this morning and look forward to the comforting aroma of baking and then some sewing.

  6. Handwriting - for those of us who learned from the nuns and other great teachers it is something that will stay with us forever as long as we take the time to write. I used to exchange letters with my sister about once a week and now we email every day. Now I only write thank you notes. I love reading the few old letters I have written by my father and mother to each other and from my father to my grandmother during the war. One that my mother wrote still has a lipstick impression on the back of the envelope. I too feel an overwhelming sadness and sense of hopelessness as I see the devastation and loss of life in Japan.

  7. I know what you mean about days with disjointed thoughts. I have those sometimes. The news of Japan's devastation is almost too much to bear. My prayers are going out for them. Carla

  8. Mary, I've been feeling very blue lately and do you want to know what I did to lift my spirits? I visited your blog and photo pages and looked at your beautiful flower photos. And yes, PLEASE, put some note cards on your Etsy site.

  9. I know how you feel, Mary. Today is a grey, foggy English day, the sort that never wakes up. Thinking of all the poor misplaced people in Japan and sending them prayers and love. xx

  10. I get that "feeling" a lot at this time of the year. it is so dreary here for a couple of weeks as we go into the transition to Spring. And yes, I do still write letters or notes to people. I think it is almost a last art. I am teaching my little one to make out thank you cards when she gets a gift just so she understands there are other ways to say thank you other than an E-Card. LOL

  11. I just can't watch TV anymore. It has made me sick for the people in Japan. The images are heart-breaking. I think we are all so stunned that there is little wonder our thoughts are disjointed. I have never kept a journal, but I do write hand-written letters, and I also send cards.

I enjoy laundry, too. Such a comfort, really. I hope Tide can send some of those portable clothes washing trucks to Japan.

  12. Some days I just feel out of sorts. No explanation. Just not right. Not sad, not happy. It doesn't usually happen on a sunny day though.
A tragedy such as what Japan is experiencing can certainly affect us. I know many people who avoid the news everyday so they don't have to hear about things that are bad. I can't do that as I want to know what is going on in the world.

  13. I'm completely with you on everything, here. Errr, but, I think that I have lots and lots of disjointed thinking days. I surely feel for Japan, too. Oh, except, I hate putting laundry away and love vacuuming.

  15. I think the internet does help/cause news like those from Japan now come closer. I was just thinking the other day that maybe it is also easier to just feel pure sympathy when there is no one to blame but Nature. (With war, for example, things get so much more complicated.)

  16. I can relate - my thoughts are often scattered (more often than not these days.) Gorgeous photos! I used to write tons of letters - now, not so much.

  18. Oddly, I used the same title as you did in my post today. The news from around the world is heartbreaking.

  19. I absolutely think there's some sort of force that binds us all together. And now, with the reactor melting down, it just gets worse.
Your heart sounds heavy, my friend. But your photography continues to inspire me.
(i hate vacuuming, too - and i keep thinking it's because i've always hated my vacuums. i want a miele).

  22. When my mind is in a jumble I know that it's time to slow down - no matter what the season or weather. I wish I could recognize this, though, before I get myself into a state!

  23. Today I can not focus on anything "to finish" so I am catching up on blogs. I have been behind since I went on retreat a month ago and am off next week to another.

Funny you mention handwriting, a baby announcement for my second child was returned to me this week - baby is 35 - as receipent has just a few months to live..... and I showed it to baby 35 and her comment was: your hand writing is just the same. Interesting that she would know as it seems to me the only writing I do these days is to sign my name to checks...... well..... I do write the "babies" thank you notes for xmas and birthday.... as I like a note as well.

We are almost to summer heat - a/c - foowie
