Going To Pot

Well, I've got almost all of my containers on the deck filled.  I've been gathering these pots for the past couple of years, mostly on sale at Target or Michael's.  A few came from HomeGoods.

I tend to mix some perennials in with the annuals in my containers.  In the past, I have used ivy and coral bells and phlox.  This year, I am including some variegated bugle.  I love the colors on this, but I wonder if it will spread to take over the container it is in.  Maybe I'll just have to divide into several containers next year...

I am definitely of the "more is more" philosophy when it comes to containers.  Lots of pots, stuffed full as can be.  I always mix my potting soil with slow-release fertilizer and Soil Moist water-retentive granules.  I really think it helps.

Petunias, Sweet William, Euphorbia and variegated ivy here.  You can see some red-leaved Coral Bells in the background.  The small-leaved plant at bottom left is Chocolate Mint.

The large pot on the right is one of my favorites.  There is not a whole lot of planting space in it, but I just love the classical urn shape.

I've had the dog with basket statue for years.  My kids have christened him Cornelius.  I'm on the lookout for something a little nicer to raise up that urn in the background.  Maybe a short pillar -- the kind you put a sundial on...

Oooo, I'm crazy for petunias!

I wish you could smell the purple Heliotrope.  It's just heavenly!  I like the way this container turned out, with the tall Angelonia in the back, the Heliotrope and Sweet William in the middle, and the variegated ivy spilling out the front.   There are a few Gomphrena in there, too.  They are the little pink globes.

Luscious lilac-colored petunias here, with that variegated bugle and some lime green sweet potato vine.  Isn't the little bunny cute?  I have a thing for garden statuary, so I really have to remember to edit...

Well, I still have a few hanging containers to fill, and I have to find a large container for my experiment this summer -- tomatoes on the deck.  Do you think it will work?

I also have a fabulous iron mirror to hang -- 50% off at HomeGoods because it was damaged.  I'm not sure I'll keep it yet -- I have to try it first and see how it looks.  Maybe you will be seeing it next week...

Have a wonderful day, dear bloggers!

It would seem that I have a new blog.  It is called In a Soft Light, and it's all about the pictures.  This is what happens when you are up in the middle of the night.  Stop by if you get a chance.

  3. I lve all kinds of flowers all mixed together like that. Your deck will be like a secret garden with all those beautiful flowers! I have chocolate mint too. If you pick a few sprigs and place them on top of the grounds in your coffeemaker before you brew, they flavor the coffee in a very delightful way! Chocolate mint coffee with no chemical flavor. Yum!

  9. I was at Home Goods yesterday and could've bought out the store, if only the budget would've allowed. Lovely planters and you've done a wonderful job filling them so that they look as if they've been going for some time instead of just having been done.

  10. It all looks wonderful! I love Angelonia as they do so well here and I have to say that particular pot with it in there, is also my fave. Even over the petunias :0).

  11. Oh I love people who get created with their potted plants. It can add so much to a porch or a corner that would otherwise be bare.

  12. I love your pot collection. They look so interesting with the different heights and styles. The urn shaped one is my favorite too. When we lived in New York, Home Goods was my favorite store. They don't have them in Utah and I miss it desperately.

  13. You are an inspiration. You certainly have an eye for what plants coexist happily in a pot. I'm going to try harder. Thanks.

  17. Oh, Mary . . . I love container planting. Why not try turning a beautiful pot upside down for that short little urn? The pedestal is also a good idea, but a short, fat one!

I'm rushing off to see your new blog. What do you mean a macro lens on your wish list? YOU TOOK THAT PICTURE ON KACEY'S BLOG WITH A REGULAR LENS? My God, woman. Can you imagine the fun you will have and the gorgeous pictures you'll take with a macro? You're rockin' Mary!

  18. Wow you have been busy. I love all the flowers and your pots. You make me want to go and buy flowers to plant in my pots. They are not as great as yours. But the flowers will disguise them. Have a great weekend.
