I just wanted to show you two of the portraits I did for Robin. Her Jack Russell terrier, Rosie, is such a cutie-pie. At age 11, though, she is slowing down and has a few bald spots. But she was still pretty feisty when she saw the camera.

I quickly learned that it's much easier to get a child to pose than a dog. lol

I'm really loving this portrait thing, even when the subjects don't want to pose for me. And I'm eagerly lining up more subjects so I can practice. If you know anyone in my area of New Jersey (Somerset and Morris counties) who wants a free portrait, let me know. :)

I hope you will all consider participating in Mosaic Monday this week. Mr. Linky will be up by 8:30pm Sunday night.

Edited to add: I'm entering the photo in this post at the iHeartFaces contest of the week entitled "Pets." Please visit their link for some really amazing photography!

  1. Dogs are loads of fun to take photos just need to get yourself several and practice!! :-)) I have eight, if there wasn't an ocean between us I'd loan you one or two for a bit of practice!! hahaha...but these photos were really quite nice..I can see Rosie's personality in them..

  2. Great photos Mary. I am loving your people (and dog) portraits as much as I have loved your flower portraits:>)

  3. Those pictures of the lovely dog look bery fine. Must be difficult to keep them standing still. Have a nice wekend.

  4. Rosie looks so cute with her little bandana. I don't have near enough pictures of my Caesar.

I hate my camera. It takes so long for the shutter to click that by the time it does the dog has walked away or the event is over.

  5. Oh yeah, I've taken photos of cats, dogs, horses, snakes, and believe me the easiest of all was NOT the dog! Actually as much as I hate to admit it was the snake that was easiest!
    Have a wonderful weekend!

  6. Great pix, loving the b/w, that's not something I ever do myself.

  7. Wonderful photos. I'm sure you'll have lots of takers on your offer! If only I lived closer!

  8. That bottom picture is amazing! I love the use of B&W...very very cool!

  9. How do you do black and white with a digital camera? I guess you can choose when you upload to the computer? I am trying to learn some photography techniques too. I think I need a different camera though.

  10. Well done Mary! I'm enjoying following along as you progress, you're doing REALLY well. I wish I could learn so quickly.

If I had to choose a favorite, I think it would be the first photo, however the image of Rosie alone truly seems to capture her spirit, and the texture of the stonework adds such visual punch. Very Nice.

  11. Rosie is so cute!! Oh, look at those sweet eyes. My dog is a Rat Terrier, cousin of the Jack and he and Rosie look a lot alike (except Rose looks like a wire haired...)

Beatiful photos!! Would love for you to do Milo and Layla, but I am in the Midwest.

  12. Your photo shows the love between owner and dog. It is so touching. I wish Teddy and I lived by you we would love a portrait. Sharon

  13. Your portraits are wonderful and Rosie is such a cutie! I would love it if we weren't on opposite coasts so you could photograph Chloe. Yesterday I blogged our attempt to get a new photo of her. Needless to say, success wasn't in the cards!

I've missed participating in Mosaic Monday in the past few weeks and look forward to returning again this week!

    Have a great weekend!

  14. ... wish I were close by! And I don't know a soul up your way :-(

Cute photos of the little fella'. Dogs definitely don't follow directions all that well when it comes to photo ops!

  15. Oh my gosh!! Those teeth are precious!!!!!

    m ^..^

  16. The first photograph is beautiful. You did a really good job. I know what you mean about dogs being hard to photograph. I was trying to take pictures of my dog last night at the park and every time I thought I had a good shot of her face, she would turn just as I snapped.

Are you in a photography class? Any recommendations?

  17. I wish I lived around there so you could do one of my feisty hounds! I love this. What a sweet doggy!

  18. These photos are outstanding! I love them in b&w too...

My dog HATES the camera...she will actually start shaking if she can't get away...a real challenge to get a pic!....Wish I lived in NJ :)

  19. Mary, Rosie is a real cutie and love your B&W photos!!!

  20. Awwwwww....such sweet, sweet photos. Mary, your photography is fabulous. If only I lived close by, I would love you to snap photos of my pets.

  21. Mary, great photo. I love to take pictures of my dogs and cats, but they do not pose either. Wish I lived near for you to take photos.

  22. You take lovely photos! For the first time in my life, I wish I lived in New Jersey! :)

  23. What a little QT Rosie is ;--)
Wonderful photographs. I've shared a mosaic of MY kitty today too.
    Hugs and blessings,

  24. These are beautiful, Mary!
I remember years ago, the wealthy owners of a horse farm where we lived and worked hired a photographer to come up from Virginia just to take pictures of their dogs.
I had her take photos of my sons, borrowing the huge sitting fee amount ($135 was huge to me at the time) against my salary. I still have those wonderful photos. I bought a couple, and she sent me a lot of free ones. She said it was for helping her with the lighting and suggesting places to shoot.
Yours remind me of that day.

  25. that second shot is just perfection

  26. I just realized that Char typed exactly what I was typing, so... backspace, start again

  27. Oh Rosie's glamour shots are terrific! Love the jaunty bandana, too. Lucky Robin to have you take pics of her house, and her dog!

Our dog Dion says to tell you he is very photogenic. :-P

  28. Mary! These are spectacular!! I am always in awe of your art but oh. You DO have a gift. I know I have said it before but these just took my breath away. Wow!

  29. Awesome photos! I love dogs. They are really man's bestfriends.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment. I love to hear what you have to say!
