White Rummage

I'll bet you've been waiting with bated breath to see what else I brought home from the rummage sale last week, yes? Well no, not really. But you are too polite to say so, and I thank you. Actually, I always feel like I'm writing a report for school entitled What I Bought at the Rummage Sale. But without the butterflies in my stomach from having to deliver it in front of the whole class. :)

First up is this pair of white urns for $1.50. each. I think I need to find a couple of myrtle topiaries to go inside. They will look nice on the deck for the summer. And I'm a sucker for anything urn-shaped.

Next, I found this gigantic stoneware compote for $3.50. I've been collecting white and cream dishes for the kitchen, so this big guy fit the bill nicely. It's marked Red Cliff Ironstone on the reverse. A little research tells me that the pattern is called Heritage, and it was probably made sometime from 1950-1980. Tureens in the same pattern are going for $65 -- $95 on ebay, so I guess it was a good deal.

You know I can't leave the rummage sale without at least one piece of milk glass. This footed candy bowl, in the English Hobnail pattern by Westmoreland, was $3. A collector's encyclopedia published in 1995 values it at $25 - $30.

The two hobnail pieces above were most likely made by Fenton. I think I paid $1.50 each. Haven't found a current price for them yet, but it's probably not more than $10 or $12 each.

And finally, I think this little vase is an antique reproduction made by the John E. Kemple Glass Works, currently selling for around $20. I paid $1. for it.

So that is what I bought at the rummage sale. :)

Our white azaleas are bursting with blooms this week, and I thought they looked really pretty in my new little vase. The green and white tole tray was a gift from Cindy, at My Romantic Home. The blue and white tufted seat is a new HomeGoods purchase to spruce up our family room. If I get my act together (highly unlikely) I will be showing you some changes there in the following weeks.

So, can you tell that I'm currently in love with white? ;)

  1. Haven't you always loved white? I was wondering about the tufted hassock. Very nice! You get an "A" on your report and an "A" on your project, which of course was finding delightful white pieces. I appreciate the fact that you do your homework. When I buy something I like, I am usually clueless.

  2. I love all the beautiful white, I've begun seeking it over some of the brighter colors I usually love just because I love the calmness of white.
Pretty seat, I'm looking forward to seeing how it fits in your room:>)

  6. I'd say that you had a very successful day at the rummage sale! The compote alone was worth the visit!

  7. Hello Mary
The wonderful thing about all your finds is that, although they are made in different materials and are from different periods they all compliment one another through their common whiteness.
I could easily find a home for the two little urns and I think they will look lovely with some topiary.

  8. Mary, I'm also a sucker for anything urn shaped. :) I absolutely love the Red Cliff ironstone compote and the pair of urns in the first photos. New Jersey must have the BEST rummage sales. I asways love the things you find.
Happy shopping and I'm looking forward to seeing your new looks in the family room.

  10. Love your Rummage Sale finds...
I'm intrigued with white myself--only recently. I think I may be coming into the white phase at the right time, as some are going for more color now...I can collect their cast offs!

thanks for showing yours-- I've got a thing for hobnail.

  13. All of your "finds" are beautiful. I often visit your blog but rarely leave a comment and on occassion post on Mosaic Mon. I felt the need to pass this on. When I visit your blog I have often admired your collection of milk glass. I was resisting the NEED to start a new collection but it has been in the back of my mind for a while now because of your collection. A couple of weeks ago a few of my daughters closest friends gave her a baby shower and one of them did flower arrangements in Milk Glass. That did it, I knew then that I MUST start a collection and on Mother's Day I was gifted with my first piece which I posted about on my blog. I don't know why but I really wanted to share with you that you have indeed inspired me.

  18. Carolyn, I am so glad you have given in to the urge to collect milk glass. Years ago I saw someone's collection displayed in white bookcases that were painted sky blue in the back, and that beautiful display has stuck with me ever since. I'm sure you will have so much fun, and be really thrilled with your collection!

  21. White just never goes out of style does it - I have a seaman's trunk filled with a complete set of white ironstone I am storing for my daughter who lives in Europe and shows no sign of ever settling into a home in North America - I get so tempted to either sell it or use it, but I already have a set of blue willow I inherited from my mom! And no place to display her set - also inherited from my mom!
Loved this post - thanks for sharing your smart buys with us!
