A Fall Garden

It was such a beautiful day yesterday, and I had my camera in the car, so on a whim I stopped at a nearby garden that is open to the public. I wrote about the Leonard J. Buck Garden in the spring here, but it has a very different look in the fall.

Years ago I used to devour seed catalogs, and knew the Latin names for many plants. Nowadays, I have forgotten most of it, and my powers of identification aren't what they used to be. I think this may be tiarella, but frankly your guess is as good as mine.

Of course this is a redwood tree. I know it's probably small compared to some of the huge ones in California, but it seems mighty large for New Jersey. :)

Um, I'm guessing wild ginger? Violets? What do you think?

The Buck gardens were built on the site of glacial rock formations, and there is a meandering stream leading to a beautiful pond, crossed by several wooden bridges.

At the entrance to the gardens, there are benches and several large planters filled with wonderful coleus and other foliage plants.

Oh how I wished my planters were this beautiful!

There was also a rock garden trough with these sedum, which look like some kind of strange landscape when viewed through the macro lens of my camera.

All in all, I spent a beautiful half hour wandering around the garden. I hope you enjoyed it, too. :)

  1. Thankyou so much for sharing these beautiful pictures with us all. You have such a good eye for a lovely photo and they are always composed so beautifully. Looking at your blog over the past months has made me pause everytime I start to take a photo and try to think what I am trying to take and could I do it better. I know what you mean about the transient nature of our lives and the need to take time to reflect. We only come this way once so should not be rushing all the time. Nature is very soothing to a burned or bruised soul. Your blog gives me so much pleasure but I only find time in my busy schedule to look in about once a week. I don't notice the time between your posts, all I see are beautiful pictures and a thoughtful commentary. You always seem to see the beauty that exists around you and I thank you so much for sharing it with us all. I live in England and love seeing the diffeent plants and flowers that you have over in the US. Take time my dear to succour your soul and don't worry about time between postings, just post when you feel the time is right and please don't burn yourself out over blogging.

  2. This was a lovely walk !! Thanks for the gorgeous pictures ! I too wish that my planters were that luscious and neat !
Concerning the 4th picture,I would say asarum - and I'm not sure about tiarella because they bloom mostly in spring, but many plants bloom again during fall if the conditions are good. If you have another pic with the foliage, we could get a complementary hint.

  20. I like that moonscape sedum; like a sculpture by Mother Nature.

It was indeed a beautiful day in our little corner of the world yesterday; I'm glad you got out to that lovely garden and took pictures to share!

    I took Howard for a colonoscopy. :-P

This gray chilly day I am heading for a farm stand with my Dad; I'm knuckling under and accepting Fall. It's time to buy some early apples.

(There's a rummage sale Friday and Saturday at St Mark's Episcopal in Basking Ridge.)

  21. Oh Mary, it's all so beautiful and you certainly don't need to remember all the names to enjoy it. We in the desert do not have those colors right now, up in the mountains they will come, but not here in the valley. I could sit and get lost in all your beauty all day long. Thanks, Char
