Where Did All This Blue Come From?

I just made a discovery -- I have a lot of blue transferware! Because my dining room is red, I tend to collect and display red transferware.

But as I was scrounging through my cupboards yesterday for something different to display on my dining room dresser, I realized that a lot of blue had found it's way into the Little Red House.

A few pieces are from my mother, including the blue spongeware pitcher, and several blue willow plates.

This little blue and white pottery cup (above) was my mother's, too.

I bought this antique platter (above) on Ebay last year.

There are some reproduction Spode dinner plates here as well. I just can't seem to resist buying a few when I see them in HomeGoods. :)

And I guess they are starting to add up, because apparently I have enough to make quite a large display.

This pitcher belonged to my mother, too. Imagine my delight when I found a miniature version (in one of the photos above) in the thrift store.

As some of you know, I collect silverplate pitchers and gravy boats as well. And I think they go nicely here with the blue and white.

This antique plate which belonged to my mother, is my favorite. I found it a few years ago when cleaning out one of our closets.

Which gives you an idea of the kind of housekeeper I am.

A very bad one. ;)

Edited to add: I am linking this post to Paula Grace's Timeless Tuesday. She always has wonderful design advice, so go and visit -- you'll be glad you did. :)

  2. Love the blue and white. I think I am a good housekeeper like you. I keep finding things in cabinets and closets, too. My house is clean, but do not look behind closet doors or in cabinets in other rooms...Kim

  4. Hi Mary, I have just begun collecting blue and white ransferware and I love it with all my reds. I have never thought I was a "blue" person but it is growing on me quickly. I love this display with the silver:>) I would like to offer my services in cleaning out your closets. It sounds like it would be a really fun treasure hunt!

  5. I love it! I think the blue and white always gives a home that classic, settled feeling and it goes with everything! I like to get all my blue stuff out in March when I've finally put all the winter looking things away and the house needs a fresh look. It also looks good with the springy, Easter things that will pop out later. Thanks for sharing your lovelies with all of us!

  6. I love your blue collection. I too have quite a collection and most of it is put away somewhere because I just don't have enough space to display it all. But you gave me an idea. And I think I will take some pictures. Have a great day! meg

  8. I adore blue and white transferware. You have a really nice collection. Your little blue polkadot cup is Polish pottery and that particular design is known as "mosquito bite".

  9. Mary, what a lovely collection of blue transferware you have! I also love blue and red both. I tend to use the red in my dining room and the blue in my kitchen. Your hutch is equally stunning. In fact, it reminds me of a buffet I have in my dining room.

  12. For someone who doesn't collect blue dishes, I'd say you collect blue dishes. I can't confine my self to one color either! I admire those houses where everything fits into the color scheme but I can't do it!

  16. It's a gorgeous collection. I love blue. But most of my house is in greens and yellow. So, my dishware collection doesn't include much blue. (Good thing: I don't have room for what would probably be a large collection.) I must live vicariously through you for that!

  17. We must be on the same page or were separated at birth. I also have a lot of blue and white, my dining room is also red and my hutch is very much like yours. I did a post on blue and white a couple of weeks ago. I have two hutches filled with blue and white and a three tiered shelf filled with my blue willow childhood dishes. I never tire of it. Reading your post today just put a big smile on my face!

    Love,

  22. The blue makes a wonderful display...you have a great deal of it, 'tis true. I really like the way that the blue looks against the reddish wood tones in your red room. Your mother had exquisite taste and you have followed in her footsteps.

  25. I love your display. I have a full set of Johnson Brothers Old British Castles in red, and over the years I've bought blue transferware on eBay and at antique shops. My dining room is Americana, so it works well. I've started to collect transferware Thanksgiving plates, and they work well with the red too.
Love your little red house and your photography!

  30. I love love love blue and white china. When I lived in Hong Kong I used to walk up a street called Hollywood Road. The road was speckled with Antique shops and high-end soft furnishing shops. Down winding alleys you would find huge narrow warehouses filled with blue and white china everything. Ginger jars, teapots, dishes and figurines. Enough to make you swoon with delight.

Your blue and white dishes are gorgeous, and I love to see collections all together on a hutch like that.
