Mosaic Monday: Merry Christmas

Last week I wrote about Christmas traditions, and how to blend old and new ones. One of the traditions in our family has been giving each of our children a new ornament every year since they were born. My son is 22 and my daughter is 18, so that's a lot of ornaments. :)

When we began this particular tradition, my one thought was that they would have ornaments to bring to their new homes when they eventually grew up and moved out. But the ornaments have also become a cherished part of trimming our tree each year; as we unwrap each one, they spark thoughts of holidays past. Taken together, they weave a tapestry of memory -- our lives in joyous moments.

Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmas-time.
~Laura Ingalls Wilder

  6. Sweet Mary-- I couldn't agree more. Our family did that as well. It was my intent on passing them on when they grew up but I honestly have the hardest time parting with them.

  30. My mom has given me ornaments each year since I was born, too. Seeing them each year brings back so many memories and is one of my favorite parts of decorating. Many ornaments have yet to come out, but tons have already made an appearance -- plenty for making my first mosaic that is. Yours by the way is positively stunning!

  35. Wonderful tradition. when I was a 4H leader (15 yrs) every year the whole group made an ornament. So my tree has many memorable ornaments. I loved doing it as did the kids. A majority of the ornaments are horse inspired. MB

  40. Beautiful Mosaic Mary. On Christmas Eve, we put out new pjs and a dated Christmas ornament at the bottom of our children's bed too (they are 24 & 20 now, but tradition is tradition) :-}

  41. Mary, this is beautiful. We do the same with our boys - all three. Our tree will have no room for anymore ornaments by the time they're eighteen. Then, when they have their first tree's on their own...mine will be lonesome.

  46. Hi Mary -- I am IN LOVE with the bug-eyed reindeer; he is a total hoot! Once again, your mosaic is stunning -- the lighting is amazing. it's as if you have taken the pictures in the golden glow of ... well, something golden.

We also gave our girls ornaments each year, but once they were nearing the double digits in age, we also gave them their own tree in the family room and they were responsible for even the lighting. Luckily the year we lost all our ornaments in Floyd we had put the girls' box in the back of Alida's closet -- so they still have their little kid ornaments, and we still put a tree in the family room for them. Eventually they'll split up the box and then I'll have to rent some children to decorate the family room tree.

    Happy Hols!
    Cass

  47. Hi Mary...

Oooh...what a fabulous Christmas photo mosaic!!! Sooo many Christmas pretties and I just love the soft lighting of the photos! You've done it again, Mary...yet another fabulous mosaic!!! Thank you so much for hosting Mosaic Monday...I have had so much fun with it this past year!!! Sure do appreciate you, my friend!!!

I also really enjoyed the quote by Laura Ingalls Wilder that you included in this post! I think that one of the most endearing things about Christmas is the child-like spirit that it brings out in all of us!!!

Warmest wishes and Christmas Blessings to you and your family, Mary!

  48. Your photos have such a warm, nostalgic feel to them. They make me feel all the good things about Christmas, especially Christmases past.

  49. Beautiful ornaments, rich colors in the photos--very much captures the spirit of Christmas! When the children were born I started the collection of ornaments for them. Every year they get their own small trees to decorate as they wish. However, my thought is some of what they pick I'd like to keep as little mementos!! Happens every year:)

  50. We have the same tradition! I keep saying my tree is going to be bare when the kids take all their ornaments someday!
