The peonies are in bloom here at Little Red House. I only have four plants -- two that belonged to my mom, one that was given me by a friend, and one that I bought.
But oh my goodness, when they bloom, the garden is a happy place, and I can't help but cut a few to bring inside. They have a delicate perfume, not as overwhelming as the wild roses and the honeysuckle currently blooming outside, but a scent that weaves it's way quietly into the senses.
I'm linking this post to Cindy's Show & Tell Friday. Thank you, Cindy, for hosting this wonderful party. :)

Thank you for your support and prayers for my father in law. As I write this he is still in intensive care. I guess the only thing to do is take it one day at a time.
One of my favorite flowers and just the scent immediately reminds me of my grandmother. I'll keep your FIL in my prayers.
ReplyDeleteI have some peonies at our old house waiting to be moved to the new for two years, now. What's so special is that they're peonies from my husband's grandmother's garden. The garden is on the farm that has been in his family for, at least, 250 years now. (Ethan Allen stopped there!) Don't you especially love plants that have a history? Don't you just love flowers period?! =]
ReplyDeleteLove, katy Noelle
I love peonies too! I have seven plants now and want more. The only problem is that they don't last long enough. Carla
ReplyDeletePeonies are one of my favourite flowers in the garden but mine won't be open for a week or two yet so it was nice to enjoy yours today Mary.
ReplyDeleteMary, those are beautiful. Our honeysuckle is already gone, but now the gardenias are blooming and smell heavenly. I would love to grow some peonies. I need to find a spot.
ReplyDeleteI've never had any peonies, but I think they're the most wonderful flowers ever. Your pictures are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorites, and I only have one plant! One that didn't survive the rain so well.
ReplyDeleteMy best to your father in law.

They are just the most pretty flower! Beautiful! I need to add them to our landscape wishlist of plants!
ReplyDeletePeonies are by far my favorite flower. I just wish the blooms would stick around longer. Maybe that's why they seem extra special.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures :)
Peonies are one of my very favorites, just behind roses. Beautiful! Funny thing is, when I look at yours (mine are yet to bloom) I can begin to smell their sweet scent. Peonies are like that.
ReplyDeleteI hope your father-in-law is doing some better.
SO beautiful... I adore peonies ♥
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos! I just love peonies. They're so elegant and happy at the same time. Thanks for sharing. :)

ReplyDeleteJust beautiful and I love the tole painted tray they are sitting on!
ReplyDeleteRobin
Beautiful! My peony plant hasn't bloomed yet since we are having a cool spring. I love the tray, too.
ReplyDeleteLovely peonies and beautiful pictures in your last post, too. I've found that looking at garden pictures is a wonderfully soothing thing to do when I'm stressed or worried. My prayers go out for your father-in-law.
ReplyDeleteHow fabulous those photos are. So moody. Jane F
ReplyDeleteFlowers are a wondrous creation, yesterday when I left for work at 2:30 my peony buds were only starting to loosen, but by the time I got home they were fully open. It was like magic!
ReplyDeleteI love peonies too. Mine sprout leaves but never bloom. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photographic angle on the peonies.....what a nice flower to bring inside to enjoy. I too have several plants that were my Mother's. She had the most gorgeous bearded purple and brown iris's. And they are now growing abundantly in our yard. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteAren't they wonderful?! Mine just started blooming two days ago and I've already photographed them several times in almost every light. I suppose I should bring some in to enjoy as well. They come and go so quickly, it's not fair.
ReplyDeletePeonies are my favorite flower. There are many others that are beautiful, but this is the only flower that takes my breath away. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteBarb
It's like Barb said-- the peony can take your breath away. Thank you for the lovely photos.

Dear Mary,
ReplyDeleteI stumbled across your blog a few weeks ago (doing a blind search for fireback backsplashes). I don't know how often you are told this, but I truly feel as though I've found a kindred spirit. I just recently entered my forties, celebrated my tenth wedding anniversary the day of your peony post, and am mother to a daughter who is seven and a son who will soon be five. The greatest treasures in my life...
So, you are a little further down life's path than me, but I feel as though your blog is a window into my future. It is a beautiful and inviting spot to be and I look forward to each of your posts.
God bless you and yours,
~ karen
Dear Karen,
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice to "meet" you! I hope you had a very happy anniversary. Thank you so much for your very kind comments! As far as "life's path" goes, I've been feeling rather lost at the moment, but as I find my way, I'll be sure to leave a few bread crumbs along the way... lol.
xoxo,
Mary
