I thought I would take a little respite from the garden posts and show you a slice of life at Little Red House. It rained here in my part of New Jersey yesterday. In fact, I think you could safely say that it poured -- one of those days where the water gushes noisily out of the downspouts, and renders the lawn a soggy mess.
Inside, the house was dark. This is a small house with low ceilings -- no recessed lights save for the kitchen. The dining room has two lights -- a crystal chandelier and a thrift store lamp, both shown here. When it is dark day, I like to turn on the lights and enjoy the warm glow that they cast.
Of course this would have been the perfect day for a book and a cup of tea, but there were the usual chores waiting. I did stop for a moment to snap a few pictures of the shadows, but then it was back to the laundry.
So my question for you is this: what is your favorite way to spend a rainy day?
Beautiful photos ... it looks so cosy. My favourite thing to do on a drizzly wet day is to sit out on the verandah where I can watch the rain fall (the verandah wraps around three sides of our double-storey house) ... relaxing on the rocking chair ... with a great book, a cuppa and some lovely music echoing out from the lounge room inside! Just perfect!
ReplyDeleteLooks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteOn a rainy day I like to draw and watch tv or movies.
A little song, a little dance. A little seltzer down my pants.
ReplyDeleteWell, you asked!
ReplyDeleteThese pictures are so nice! I don't have good natural light, and always wonder if my shots get too dark. But you've just shown me how pretty a subdued background can be-thanks!
ReplyDeleteI like to cook when it's raining, comforting and yummy!
If I had been home yesterday morning when as I found out there was a huge thunderstorm, I would have been all curled up on the couch with a cup of coffee and an old black and white movie. Sorry I missed the rain.. and even the thunder.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!

You pictures are beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Photos & interiors are so beautiful. Seriously, beautiful!!!!
ReplyDeleteMachelle
Exactly what I did...painting!
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck is Kate talking about? LOL!
ReplyDeleteIt's a rainy day here and I'm doing my least favorite thing, working. If I had my druthers I'd rather spend the day with my husband and go out for lunch.
The first photo with the chandelier is so pretty! The black and white look beautiful together!
Your words and the second photo capture just what I like about a rainy day, too! I, also, like the outside aspect of how the earth is drinking it up. Rain on the garden~the birds having a field day~the grass getting lusher and lusher~the sound of the rain on the leaves - I love it but, inside sounds warmer! =]
ReplyDeleteLove, katy Noelle
Love those photos of your cozy home. I love lamps on too when it is dreary outside.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful images of you home! Every detail- perfection! Rainy days mean a little extra time to read and peruse decorating books.
ReplyDeleteYvonne
I love to spend a rainy day in the sun room watching it rain, reading a magazine, with a cup of coffee! Carla
ReplyDeleteKnow what you mean. I like to turn on my lamps too. Candles are nice too. Just happy when I don't have to go anywhere on those types of days.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Mary! I'm afraid the light here in our little farm cottage is about the same as yours. Looks like it's going to be like this here in Kansas for the rest of the week. You have such a cozy home...a lovely place to spend the day when you can't get outside to play in the garden. Enjoy your day and a cup of tea with a good book....Maura
ReplyDeleteIt has been raining off and on for days here. We watch tv/movies or play computer games. Must do housework, too!
ReplyDeleteThe best way to spend a rainy day is with a good book in your hand and a dog in your lap :)It just gives me an excuse to "nest" and not leave home! Love your crystal.
ReplyDeleteMorning, Mary! Oh, I love seeing your pretty house and it does look so cozy. Just such lovely vignettes.
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Hmmmm, the best way to spend a rainy day? Definitely home, in a warm house. Reading. Writing. Blogging. Baking a little. Napping? Drinking a nice cup of hot coffee. Reading blogs. Hey! I'm doing all of the above except baking and napping and yup, it's raining! Lovely photos, as always, Mary. Sincerely, Susan
ReplyDeleteI like to spend a rainy day in bed with a book!
ReplyDeleteI love the cozy feel of your 'rainy day' photos!
I love the crystal chandelier! I'm glad it has finally stopped raining. I think I may need a couple of goats to cut the grass! Jude
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the beauty that's found in a rainy day. Your home is lovely, in all kinds of weather!
ReplyDeleteI am drooling over your crystal chandy -- so pretty on a cloudy day. On a rainy day, I love to hide out in my sewing room (around the usually chores with 4 small children).
ReplyDeleteHave a beautiful day!
I guess one of the things that keeps you busy is cleaning all the crystals on that gorgeous chandelier—it really sparkles!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures! I just love mood lighting!
ReplyDeleteAhhh Mary. This took me away from my little office and work. Wish it were raining...
ReplyDeleteWe are getting this same storm system today and I have spent my morning over an extra cup of coffee and with my book. My hubby stayed home for a few extra hours and he read, too. In between, we had good conversation. We should do it more often...extra cup of coffee, conversation, and a good book. (My laundry awaits.)
ReplyDeleteI love your vignettes. So petty. You do have some of the neatest accessories. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteOh I just love a rainy day...when I get to I love to sit with a cup of tea and read a book, I am reading a new Lee Child's right now...what are you reading ???
ReplyDeleteI love to put the lights on too, your house looks so cozy Mary :)
All the best,
Kathy :)
Such a lovely vignette...thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy!
Cathy
It rained in this part of the garden state as well. My favorite thing to do inside when it is raining outside? Make a pot of tea and curl up with a good book! I will never tire of your beautiful posts and photographs (Willowwood).
ReplyDeleteI invite you to stop by and enter my Cotage Charm giveaway.

Beautiful. We have had alot of rain, and more rain coming this afternoon. My favorite thing to do on a rainy day is to cook. I love being home when it's raining and, yes, kind of dark and dreary looking. Then while my food is cooking I can curl up with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream. Mmmmmm. Life is good. Thanks for sharing :)!
ReplyDeleteOh, I LOVE rainy days! I like nothing better than curling up with a really good book, climbing into my favorite chair and enjoying a cup of tea. Of course, a little snack of shortbread cookies only adds to the fun! I adore your pictures of your cozy house!
ReplyDeleteThis is the most beautiful blog I have even seen!! The pictures are lovely. I am so in love with this house :-)
ReplyDeleteIt rained gently overnight. This morning I decided to plant some annuals in pots so I found my bear bell and jingled as I worked. Yesterday there were two bears in a field across the road. I was planting some nasturtium seeds when it started to rain gently again. We love the rain as we get so little of it. It's a wonderful relief as there's a big wildfire burning about 40 minutes southeast of us. Your home looks lovely in the rain Mary!
ReplyDeleteThat is stunning Mary...your home is just the erfect place to be on a chilly, rainy day. Hmm...come to think of it, your home is the perfect place to be in any weather!
ReplyDeleteLove,
Sue
That chandelier adds such incredible light. Your yellow glowing windows are a respite for the people passing by ... i just bet they wish they were inside warming up with a cup of tea. :)
ReplyDeleteNo! don't mention laundry -- you are supposed to live an enchanted life that doesn't include such workaday chores. We want to think of you arranging milk glass and silver pitchers and delicate tea cups ALL THE TIME! :-P
ReplyDeleteAnd at least it's not raining today, not anymore! Yesterday was a doozy--my daughter who lives in CA is visiting with her boyfriend (whose family lives in the Mojave Desert!) and they chose yesterday to wander around Princeton. With umbrellas. Climatic shock.
But it's all so nice and GREEN. We'll miss this in August.
Gorgeous pictures, as always!
I think our grass is now 6-feet high, in one week.
Cass
they (who ever they are) say that baking on a rainy day is never a good idea because it doesn't turn out right...well I love to bake on rainy days and smell up the house with cozy yummy smells and cuddle up in a chair and watch tv or read a book. I love to just listen to the rain and think of how much my mother use to love the rain...it is comforting to me.
ReplyDeleteWow- such beautiful lighting!!
ReplyDeleteI spent my rainy day yesterday baking a batch of walnut brownies, watching movies, and snuggling up with my cat ♥
Wonderful photos, Mary! I like to curl up and read on a rainy day...and we're sure having our fair share of them in the midwest this spring!
ReplyDeleteIF I ever like to clean, which I don't that much anymore, it's on a rainy day.
ReplyDeleteThat first photo is stunning. What a gorgeous shot of the chandelier and is that a chocolate pot I spy in the right corner? Lovely!
ReplyDeleteI like to spend a rainy day indoors on the couch with the kitties. A cup of tea and a scone make it even nicer.
Beautiful photos. Seeing your chandelier so bright and pretty reminds me that I need to go dust/clean the one in my bedroom.
ReplyDeleteAlison
What elegant, cozy photos! I wish I could say that I spend rainy days curled up with a great book. Listening to the rain patter outside. That sounds so serene. But in reality, all that rain adds to my day is a jumble of umbrellas, raincoats, and rainboots. Oh, and mud. My littles love mud.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite way to spend a raining day is reading and listening to music. Unfortunately, the way I usually spend it is behind my desk at work - or doing chores at home if it's a weekend. The only time for leisurely daytime reading is on vacation!
ReplyDeleteAnything indoors works for me on a rainy day. Whether it's laundry or reading or dusting or creating - they somehow seem to have the extra added ingredients of peace and satisfaction when done inside a cozy house, sheltered from a storm. ::Jill
ReplyDeleteIt will be raining all week end ,any way that is what weather man said .I get real lazy. I think I will be sewing. You have a wonderful home .Hope you have fun week end. If I can do this Mosaic maker I will be there on Mondays Laura Q
ReplyDeleteHere in the Northwest, we have to do pretty much everything in the rain; or we'd get nothing done! I love to curl up with a pot of tea, a good book (or blog), while listening to Bach or Mozart. If I'm going out, our local Woods Coffee store with it's muted lighting, cushy leather sofa and chairs, and lodge-style decor is a great place to sip tea and read the newspaper.
ReplyDeleteMost who know me know that a cloudy, rainy, thundering and lightening day is my VERY MOST FAVORITE kind of day. I look forward to them as much as some look forward to a vacation. I bake, sleep, read, stoke the fire (in wintertime), watch movies...I enjoy every single minute of a rainy day...every single wet minute !
ReplyDeleteAnd, I just ADORE turning on lamps and lighting candles on a cloudy day.
See you tonight for MM
