It always happens around this time of year. I'm tired of heat. I'm tired of colors. I crave the simplicity of autumn.
I long for cool nights and sweaters and throw rugs over my knees. I want to cherish the last beautiful blooms on the rose bush, and an old favorite novel.
I look forward to feathering my nest with warm golds and beiges and leather and ivory. I crave brown. lol
Now I know that this is just a passing phase. I'm still loving summer, although we could stand a little rain here. But it's nice to have something to look forward to, right?
All items shown here are thrift store or rummage sale finds. :)
Oh, Mary, what a lovely, wonderful post. It's funny, too, because, yesterday, I heard crickets and got bit by the same bug. I've decided to add a "favorite things" list in my sidebar and the only two very heartfelt things that I can come up with at the moment are: September and crickets. I DO NOT want school to start, though. It seems like summer vacation has only just begun.
ReplyDeleteWith wishes for gentle summer moments, Katy
P.S. I've, also, had the thought that I am going to have some kind of wonderful fun with my camera in the fall!!! =]
I'm an Oregonian stuck in Az. I LOATHE summer here!!
ReplyDeleteI look forward to time in the mountains as the Fall weather begins. Cool, cool evenings and clear blue skies all day long!

Mary, I get that way in the summer too...but not quite yet for me...usually it comes near mid August (not to mention that I'm still enjoying the boys, not ready for driving the bus full yet and seeing my baby off to full time Kindergarten)...not quite yet :)
ReplyDeleteBUT...this post refreshed me with the wonderful crisp thought of Autumn...my most favorite season of all :)
Of all the seasons, autumn is the one where I feel most alive. So I know of what you speak.
ReplyDeleteIt began raining in the night. The earth is happy.
Oh Mary what a great post. Like you I am looking forward to the next season but for me here in Australia the next season is 1st September and Spring.
ReplyDeleteAlison
Giggle.
ReplyDeleteMe too. Last week i was groaning about the lack of summer, this week i'm dreaming of winter foods and warm socks.
Oh Mary me too! I recently bought some red material so I can start making some fall throw pillows for my sofa.
ReplyDeleteAs always...Your photos are beautiful and I love the mosaic photos in the post below...thanks for sharing :)
Good Morning Mary, I know that feeling very well but it's a bit early for me to start thinking of Autumn. It's funny how a person's 'mind set' changes as it get's closer to fall and then again winter. I'm looking forward to cooler days as our temps are nearing the 3 digits again this week after lots of rain. The humidity is so high that you are soaked shortly after walking out the door. I hope you get some cooler weather soon so you can enjoy summer for a bit longer. :)
ReplyDeleteIt'll hit me, too, but not yet. Not yet...
ReplyDeleteI like Fall, but not what follows. We have had thunder storms roll thru the last 2 nights. We needed the rain, but I could have done with out the thunder and lightening - I need some sleep.:)
ReplyDeleteWell it is still much too soon for me to be yearning for the browns of fall....now dealing with the browns of my dried up grass and garden and hoping for rain...Now I am off to a local thrift store:)
ReplyDeleteYes, we always want the seasons to march along to cooler or warmer temperatures. But I must admit it like the cool, crisp autumn air and the beautiful golds and red in the garden.
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely photos and sentiments!! and that cloth....what is it?
ReplyDeleteDon't wish summer away too quickly....remember last winter? Autumn will be here soon enough and we'll be wishing for Spring again!!! :)

ReplyDeleteWe've had so many days of rain and very little sun and heat that I am not with you on your sentiment, yet. Bring on the sun, please! Bright blue skies, the chirp of the birds early in the morning as the earth feels the warming rays of sun touch the nooks and crannies within the garden. Birds bathing in the stream, the flit of butterflies from flower to flower, and the coolness of evening spent by the fire roasting marshmallows. We have not had enough of that yet.
ReplyDeleteMarilyn, the cloth is a fringed cotton throw that I got in HomeGoods a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteShirley, I'm still missing some beautiful summer days too. We have had temps at 90-100 for two weeks now. Today, it is 79 and raining, but the humidity is unbearable. Oh, for 70 and breezy... :)
I'm totally with you on that one... I so look forward to autumn (particularly Halloween!)♥
ReplyDeleteMy part of NJ is getting a good rain today. I'm craving green..as in grass!
ReplyDeleteI so can relate. It generally hits me in August and I can't wait for that month to be over because the first weekend in September is when the pastels are put away and my lovely warm colors are brought out. My house just feels so much "homier" in the fall. In fact, I planted pumpkins this year for the first time. I can't wait to see how the do.
ReplyDeletealways!!! xo
ReplyDeleteWe have just begun getting into summer, and the heat gets to me too, but I want the summer to linger a little longer!
ReplyDeleteI love this. I'm not there quite yet, though. I love July except for the heat and fans in every room. :<) But oh, the flowers!!
ReplyDeleteI totally understand. Being from the south, we have very limited fall/winter seasons. I always long for autumn....always!
ReplyDeletelove this post and your candor. soooo true!!! we are beginning a heat wave in southern california. agggggggggggh. not my fave by a long shot! bring on the brown! (and i don't mean sunburned hills ready to explode into flame!)jkj
ReplyDeleteI count the days until Fall and Winter every year. Ever since I was quite young I have felt myself getting a bit depressed as Summer came around. I totally dislike heat and bright sunlight gives me migraines. I think I have that Seasonal Affective Disorder in reverse!

Mary, it is so nice to find a kindred spirit. I too am longing for fall.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful images and words here. I am totally in tune with your longing for autumn and brown.
ReplyDeleteI am good for about three weeks of summer.
