OMG

Today my daughter turns 17.  She is scheduled to take her driver's test at 11:30 am.  Holy crap.  Is noon too early to start drinking?

Edited to add:  She passed.  Came home from the test and drove herself to school for the rest of the day.  I've decided to choose brownies over alcohol.  Crying helps, too.  ;)

  2. Happy birthday to your daughter! My oldest took his test in June, and the younger one has his permit and takes his next June....hence the reason i tend to stay off the roads as much as i can.....Seriously, she will be fine...I swear these kids will be better drivers than we EVER were with all the videogame practice theyve had lol! Good luck to your daughter

  5. Mary, Happy Birthday to your daughter. She is lovely and she looks like you. She'll do just fine with the driving, and you could call it a celebratory drink.

  6. She's taking the test at 11:30? Noon will be too late!

Best wishes to your lovely daughter who looks as if she'd be a perfectly responsible young driver. Hope that she gets her license on the first try. It's so much less stressful that way.

  8. Happy Birthday to your lovely daughter - we share the same birthday - although she is just a tad younger! Hope the driving test goes well and that everyone stays sane and happy.

  9. No, in fact I highly recommend a stiff one before she takes to the road on her own. I've been drunk pretty much the past twelve months now;) Happy Birthday pretty girl!

  11. It's not early enough if she doesn't pass! Trust me, I know.

Hapy birthday to your daughter. And may the force be with you when the insurance bill comes - I live in NJ too!

  12. Happy Birthday to your beautiful daughter. I'm sure she will do just fine; however, it is always nail-biting time for a mother. I'm not sure it gets any easier for us, either! Sally

  13. Claudia -- happy birthday!

Mental Mama -- I'm just shoving brownies into my mouth at the moment.

Ellen -- my husband has decided to move to Ireland if she doesn't pass. He's got his passport with him, and is eligible for dual citizenship because his grandmother was an emigrant. Oh, and we have a 21-year-old son. Our premiums are already scary.

  14. Wish her happy birthday, and run to the front door. The emergency alchol delivery should be arriving there right about now! LOL.
She will be fine, we all managed, hey I only failed once.....

  15. Congratulations to your daughter! The driving is a milestone for her and sadly, for you. But someday soon, you'll get used to the fact that she's driving.

And if it's noon here, it's 5 PM somewhere. So no, it's not too early to start drinking. Just another one of my rules.

  16. Oh my, she looks like a very smart,
    responsible driver.
    Pay the premiums
    and hang onnnnnnnnnn.

  17. Mary,

My daughter just turned 18 Nov 17th. She doesn't have her license yet, thank goodness. lol!! She is studying for it now. She told me when she turned 17, that she wasn't ready. Fine with me! Happy birthday to your dear daughter!

  18. Oh Mary, she is beautiful! :) Lol! I wonder if I caused my mother so much stress? Brownies are much better, and those you can share with your daughter!

  27. Yes, I remember well the day both of my children received their driver's license. Sigh...

The only thing that made me feel good was knowing they were safer drivers than some of the friends they had been driving with.

  28. Ohhhhhhhhh, I hear you, and I totally understand! I'm still not comfortable with my son driving, and he's a senior in college!

Your daughter is a beautiful young woman. Hope she has a happy birthday.

  30. I remember this feeling!

My daughter is 31 years old & still talks about how the day she passed her test. The surprise was allowing her the use of the car (my brand new car) for the day.

    Congratulations to your lovely daughter...

oh -just wait until she turns 21 & takes you out for that drink. That is a really a wierd feeling. Just had to add something for you to look forward to- ha ha.

  31. Mary, she's so beautiful. What a wonderful, fresh face. I love her freckles! This is a rite of passage I took but won't get to experience from the other side since I don't have kids, but you DO remember what a huge thing this is for her! Unfortunately, my parents were thilled beyond words because I was driving from 14 on.... it WAS a different time, and I am YOUR age!

Give her wings and an airbag and let her go!

  32. I'm sure you can start drinking now that she is actually a driver on the road. I like the idea that teenagers cannot get their licese until 17...here in Georgia..our teens can get their permits at 15 which is far too early.

  33. Drinking would probably set a bad example - go hide in a closet so she doesn't see you ;)

    Congrats Mary & daughter!

  34. Hi Mary,

    Congrats and Happy Birthday to your daughter...•:*¨ ♪♫♪♫ ¨¨*:•.* •:*¨ ♪♫♪♫ ¨¨*

I remember oh so well the day my kids got theirs, my son was first, I just got a new car so I gave him my old one, well he passes the test and off he goes to his job at the Mall, I followed him, I thought I was a pretty good detective and would have gotten away with it ~ if I hadn't followed ALL the way in to see him park the car. YUP he caught me, YIKES. We laugh about it now, but let's just say laughter was not coming out of his mouth that day !!!

  39. Happy Birthday to your daughter.

Mary, she's so lovely. To me she looks like someone from another time and place. I love the fact that she has such a natural look, not alot of makeup....just fresh and pretty. I think of the Little Women. Your daughter would be perfect in the clothing of that era. Your such a great photographer. Think about what a beautiful image that would be.

  40. Happy birthday to your beautiful daughter. I so remember those tears when Dan passed his test...I mean, those insurance rates were killer! *grin* Aw...it is a big deal...for them AND for Mom and Dad. I think I would have chosen the brownies too...maybe with a little white zin! : )
