We were young and foolish when we got married; we did not register for wedding gifts. We had some crazy idea that it might seem like we were being greedy. Thus, we never got the sterling silver place settings that other brides and grooms receive when they wed.
Actually, that was probably a good thing, since it has given me the excuse to frequent lots of thrift stores and antique shops over the years, buying pretty dishes and silver.
This serving bowl was a thrift store find last year. I think I paid about $5. for it. The spoons I found in an antique shop. The set of five was $60. They are coin silver, made in New Jersey around 1850.
And you know I just LOVE the monogram, even though it's not mine. ;)
they are gorgeous - I think of your wonderful finds when I browse through a thrift store.
ReplyDeleteMy husband use to ask me what are going to the thift store to buy? I replied I have no idea but I will know when I see it. Those are some great finds..Have a Great Day

The monogram on the spoons is so beautiful! We didn't register for silver, fine china or crystal either when we got married. I hae regretted it eer since. I felt the same way that you did, that those things were expensive and I woud look greedy.I also didn't understand the need for them way back at 21 years old. Believe me, when my daughters get married I will counsel them differently!
ReplyDeleteThe same with me, Mary. When we married almost 50 years ago, not a sole we knew could have afforded the pretties and we didn't expect it.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I have bought things over the years but so wish I had a few more of the finer pieces. When my daughter married, she did sign up for silver, pretty china and we are both so glad she did. She doesn't use it a lot right now, but she will in the future...
I love monograms, too, and they sure don't have to be my own...

hahahahhaaaa...SOLE ? How about SOUL..
ReplyDeleteI love the pieces we pick up throughout life because with them comes the history of who might have used them before us.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, Mary. Hey, it's snowing here in Maryland this morning and the schools are closed. Finally! We have a snow day.
ReplyDeleteI have honestly missed your lovely blog full of wonderful photos of various interesting and beautiful details. I so much like your style which is so special and interesting. I love every corner and every detail that decorate your lovely and warm home that I have seen so far on your photos. (I’ve just came back from your beautiful kitchen which photos you posted before a week or so).
ReplyDeleteYou mosaic bouquet is spectacular.
I am sorry that I am late to wish you everything the best for your birthday. May love surround you and may your days be blessed!
The spoonful photos are just great. I like the way you took the photos. And the monogram is beautiful, indeed.
I do appreciate your nice and friendly comments on my blog. Thank you very much!
They are beautiful!

Such a varied history is in the cutlery, and the bowl. They are beautiful, and have a patina of love surrounding them.

Gorgeous silver, Mary! The bowl is great, too.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't do a wedding registry either. It still makes me slightly uncomfortable...

I love your silver Mary...I always look for pieces when I am out but haven't been lucky enough to find any.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Robin
Such a find! Going shopping for these sort of things is so much fun - don't ya think?
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!

There's something cool about a person cherishing a monogram even if it isn't her own.
ReplyDeleteYour silver spoons are just lovely. I love monograms too. I don't care it it is mine or not. They are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't register either. Did people do that in the 70's?
ReplyDeleteLove the monogramed silver, it so so pretty.
Absolutely beautiful! I love antiques and have been so happy to find antique auctions in our area of Norway! I try and pick up something each time I'm there- it's kinda hard not too!!!
ReplyDeleteYou know? I think you may have a point there as far as having things given to you. Starting out with NOTHING but dishes from S&H green stamps and my clothes in the back of a 1952 ford, just may have helped make me a collector and lover of beautiful things. I appreciate everything I have...and.. :) everything YOU have! You never cease to amaze and inspire me and I thought I was too old to continue to collect. I don't think you EVER are. Do you? What a joy your blog is, Mary.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Mona
What a gorgeous monogram!! Nothing new like that around - old is best. Sally
ReplyDeleteFirst let me say that I am so glad to hear that I am not the only person who never received all the china, silver and crystal that registered brides usually receive. My husband has grown accustomed to my obsession with dishes but the silver....I am still making do with a set of silverplate, Jazzine (a handmade Lebanese flatware) and another flatware made in Italy. Your beautifully monogrammed flatware may have started a whole new collection. It is gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the silver you find...when we got married my mother-in-law offered to buy out silver as a wedding gift...Nice thought, she bought what she liked not what I wanted. It was gaudy gaudy gaudy....I sold it years later on E-Bay. And I felt to good.....
ReplyDeleteHi Mary, I stumbled across your blog yesterday when I was googling red transferware. By now I've gone through almost half of your old posts, enjoying myself thoroughly. I'm currently changing the decorations in my sitting room, and your blog is so inspirational (much better than any decoration book or magazine!!!). For me, it's also nice to get to see another side of America: I normally visit the USA once a year, for the Romance Writers of America National Conference. As the conference is always held at a big hotel in the heart of a big city, so I tend to associate the USA with urban jungles (I'm so not a big-city girl!). Your neighbourhood is so much prettier than anything I usually get to see when sightseeing.
ReplyDeleteSo thank you for much inspiration and much food for thoughts!
Best wishes from Germany,
Sandy :-)
The monogram style on the spoons is just lovely!
