Autumn Rambles

We are given so much; the full bounty of the season spreads before us as we walk. Tall, arching trees overhead are like some great cathedral. Sunlight dances through their leaves, as through windows of stained glass, scattering red and gold jewels across our path. They are laden with autumn's gifts too, which fall to the ground, crunching beneath our feet as we climb the hill. Soon the sun will be warm on our backs as it wheels across the empty sky.

Already, though, we can smell the decaying leaves on the forest floor, and the sharp wind is a constant reminder of what is to come. It is so bittersweet, this season, with it's warmth and fruitfulness overshadowed by the knowledge of it's own end. Soon, all this is will be nought, and we will mourn the dying of the light.

So come, walk with me and gather in the bounty.

  3. I agree with JarieLyn. I feel it, too, Mary; the ending of my most favorite season of all. I absolutely was made for Autumn, I live it, breathe it and it becomes me. I miss it already...I'm going to go peek out my window and catch it in my memory before she blows away :)

  7. Your words and your photography...lovely!

Still, they are seasons after all and each one follows the next. Even though colder, shorter days are coming, we have the promise that it will not last forever. (Even though it can certainly feel as if it does.)

  13. Every time I come here and my husband is in the room looking over my shoulder he comments on what beautiful photos you take:>) And you do! I love autumn, I do. It is breathtaking, but there is always the promise of winter behind it and I just can't call it my favorite season. I enjoy it while it's here, but it is so fleeting..

  18. What beautiful, graceful words. Yesterday hubby and I took a 5 hour drive through Southern Utah Canyons to see the display of Autumn. It hasn't arrived in full color at the 9,900 foot level yet I was so surprised. But we did see a little of God's paintings which I will post soon. Thank you for your inspiration...
