The Calla Lilies Are in Bloom...

I think everyone who knows me or reads this blog would agree -- I tend to start getting a mite cranky in February.

I miss spring.

And when I see flowers on sale at the supermarket, I just can't resist. Besides, I have this thing about photographing flowers.

I waste way too much time doing it. :)

I'm really more of a country or cottage garden sort of girl, but I picked up these calla lilies because I thought they might make for some interesting photographs. And so I took advantage of the little bit of sunshine yesterday to shoot some calla lily portraits. :)

Am I the only one, or do calla lilies automatically remind you of Katharine Hepburn's famous lines in Stage Door? I used to love quoting those lines in my best Larchmont Lockjaw accent when I was a kid.

I was such a dork.

My mother actually met Katharine Hepburn once, when she was staying as a guest at the home where my mother worked as a maid. My mother said she was very elegant and gracious.

Rather like my calla lilies. :)

  6. Oh Mary, you certainly are not a DORK. Good grief, we all have favorite quotes, etc. It's what makes us unique, one-of-a-kind (OOAK), and that is wonderful. (o:

Your photography is amazing, and I don't think you spend too much time on taking pictures, they bring joy and the hope of warmer weather to many people, like me.

    Hugs,
    Joyce

  10. Lauren, no, I'm from NJ, but I was always fascinated by Kathatrine Hepburn's very snotty upper class accent...

  13. Mary -I love the way you compose your still life shots. You seem to combine surfaces and textures with flowers but with things together in unlikely ways and sometimes a little off center. It makes for a very impressive still life. My daughter photographs dead or dying flowers and says there is beauty even in death...I think that's a famous quote but can't attribute it to anyone - so apologies for that... sorry Mary I noticed a spelling error and corrected it... and then made another...

  14. Absolutely beautiful photography. I truly don't believe your photography could ever be thought of as "wasting your time away". I so enjoy popping in to see your photography.

I love calla lilies as well.

  19. These are my sister's favorite flower. Oh, how she would love these. She had them in her wedding. Which I couldn't attend. (I was having a baby).

Your photos, with those backgrounds (the 1st and the black) are absolutely exquisite. As are you.

  21. Flowers are endlessly fascinating to me, too, and waiting all winter for some to bloom is just about killing me. Next time I go to town (30 miles away) I need to pick up a few different kinds! Thanks for sharing these and helping me smile today.

  24. Just seeing those words on Mona's sidebar lured me in---and your pink beauties in their nurturing warm pot are just lovely. Miss Kate's voice echoed in my head as I clicked on the link, and she'd have LOVED these!!

Plenty of cranky going on here in the Heartland today---TWO DEGREES on my screen and promises of minuses tonight. Thank you for such a sweet breath of Spring!!
