Yesterday was a dreary, rainy day. Even the resident deer at Little Red House seemed to feel the lack of sun.
They spent most of the day sheltering under the trees at the edge of the tall grass. But late in the afternoon, the young ones decided it was time to frolic. Cute, right?
Wrong.
This is what the little buggers were really up to. Eating my garden! No, they are not cute little Bambis -- they are garden-ravaging monsters!
Awww, c'mon Mary, they are just doing a little pruning. My deer like to nip the ends off my apple trees but it doesn't seem to really hurt them and I love seeing them play in the backyard so much I think it's worth a little nip here & there:>) I have so far never lost anything major i my garden even though they come up and eat out of the birdfeeder outside the bedroom window. They are so cute;.)
ReplyDeleteThey are cute creatures but can be disastrous to gardens around here. It's fun to watch them romp and play as long as they stay away from the garden! ~Adrienne~
ReplyDeleteThey're cute but EVIL. They've eaten all the branches off our oak tree as far up as they can reach. Next I'm expecting to see them out there with a ladder to get to the higher ones!

Aw yes, the good, the bad, and the ugly! And to think we actually feed them to encourage them to come closer! What?
ReplyDeleteDeer: A Love/Hate Story.
ReplyDeleteThe deer do look so ... well, dear ... don't they? But when you have to live with them in the environment and see what they do to trees they are certainly not endearing.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with yours.
Oh, and I love that new header photo you have. Very scrumptious.
Warmest wishes,
firefly
Oh no! Do you use the old remedies...hair gleaned from the brush and hung up on the tree...a marvelous look truly. (My apple orchard friend swears by this.)
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Mary!
ReplyDeleteWe have a slew of deer around our home too.. and yes, they 'prune' everything! In the spring their favorite meals are all of the buds off the trees. Not so great the for leaves!
Have a fabulous week!
xoxo~

Hi Mary
ReplyDeleteWhen we lived in PA it was okay to give permission for hunters to hunt with bow and arrow in your yard during hunting season. Some people would really protest. My friend called it "the Bambi syndrome"!
I guess you have to have lived with deer and seen them demolish your flowers and bushes before you really get it! They are very cute looking but looks can be deceiving can't they?
Rhondi xo
I have to say I think they are adorable and so cute no matter what they are doing. Sorry they are eating your garden, but gotta love em.
ReplyDeleteOH Mary, that just made me laugh! I thought the same thing about the cute little squirrels here...until they tore up my cushions and used the stuffing for nest fluff! Now they are just rats with bushy tails to me! Okay, still kind of cute..but I don't think of them nearly as fondly. I can't imagine having deer! Next on my not so cute list...racoons. These monsters attacked our fish pond and ate every single fish we'd had for close to 10 years :( I prefer the Disney version of wildlife personally.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Dena
Oh Mary...they are cute.....sorry they are eating your garden though!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed looking at the pics of your town...that looks like it could be my hometown back in New England....
Hugs,
Robin
LOL Mary! Here I was, thinking that awwww... they are so cute! And then wham! LOL
ReplyDeleteHave a beautiful day...
hugs,
rue :)
I think God made deer and mice and such really cute on purpose. It's the only way we'd put up with the damage they do and not completely wipe them off the face of the planet.
ReplyDeleteThey are really cute though.
They're still cute, Mary, regardless!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Donna
Mary,
ReplyDeleteThey are such beautiful creatures, but can do a lot of damage. We have woods at the end of our block, and they come right up the street in the summer looking for a sweet flower snack.
Mary,
ReplyDeleteHow cute are they? I know how you feel..my parents have the cutest little bunnies who eat their plants too.
Michelle
Oh no!!!!
ReplyDeleteOnly cute to look at when they are destroying someone elses garden or in a documentary on the tv.
Alison
One of my co-workers has the exact same description for the deer around her house.
ReplyDeleteThey have eaten almost everything in my parent's yard. It's so hard to garden when they are around but they are cute to watch!
ReplyDeleteMary, this made me miss Princeton. In the evening all the deer would be walking around the neighborhoods. Bambi is so cute, even though they can be a problem for the garden. Karen
ReplyDeleteOh yeah - I completely understand! Every one of God's lovely creatures is determined to eradicate something I have planted.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to mention that I have the blue and white table square you gave me on my table in my post today (Tuesday). It looks so beautiful on my table! Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteVery cute but Very Naughty..Great photos, just lovely!!
ReplyDeleteoh... sorry about that!
ReplyDeleteI get 'it'..I call them 'big mice' where I live..people who live in deer country and care about their garden understand. My apple tree is done blooming..looks like we are about a month ahead here in the foothills of California..thanks for fun blogs Mary.
ReplyDeleteHear Hear, I totally agree about deer as pests.
ReplyDeleteThe cheeky beggers ate 2/3's of my 20 new arborvitae put in last summer...and even ate my tulips that they have never dared molest in past years. How could something so graceful become such unmannerly marauders? Share my space, sure...share my shrubs and ornamentals? NEVER!
Found you from Suzanne's blog. I seem to be wandering along in her trail wherever I roam - sorta like a puppy, but not nearly as cute. (In fact, a quick scan just revealed a lot of familiar faces in the comments section!)
Enjoyed the visit!
