Goodbye, Country Home

Did you get this issue?  The last issue of Country Home magazine?  How sad is that?  This magazine has been such a great part of my life.  Here are a few pages from the final issue:

Isn't this beautiful?  I love that the very symmetrical and proper Georgian house is made of logs!  And the garden?  Gorgeous!

How cute is this wreath?  I may try to make this one.  It would look wonderful on our front door.  :)

And of course, I adore these wonderful red fabrics.  So pretty!

Goodbye, Country Home!

  1. I guess we just have to think of it as a beloved friend moving away after retiring. It will be missed.

  3. Yes, very sad indeed! How many quiet moments of leisure or of inspiration spent within those pages!

  4. I just received my last issue today. So far that is two magazines down for the count. Cottage Living and Country Home. They offered me MORE magazine as a substitute. I don't want that one....:( ~ Robyn

  5. I'm surprised it is being discontinued... seems there are so many readers. Must not have been profitable anymore though.... *sigh

  6. I know, sad isn't it? There have been several of my favorite magazines that have been discontinued. What's a girl to do? LOL

  7. Oh, I love, love that red print fabric!! That's too bad that they are folding. I'm afraid we're going to see a lot more of that before it's all over.

  8. I did get that same announcement with my last issue this last week. How sad is that?

  9. No, no, no. Say it isn't so. I really loved Country Home. It was much more to my taste than Country Living. I'm very dismayed by all my favorites going under, including Mary Englebreit's Home Companion. Sad.

  11. I've never subscribed to that one - but I will miss Domino too

  12. How sad! I hate this economy thing we have going on. I've subscribed since the beginning, and now there will be a hole in my life each month. Sally

  13. I'm sad about Country Home. It will pain me to say goodbye when I receive my final issue in the mail. The good news is there are lovely blogs like your own to help fill the void. Thank you for the beautiful images you share on a regular basis. ~Kathy

  14. Another loss! I found it particularly sad that this last issue was one of the best I've seen lately, and I was a longtime subscriber.

Sigh.... so many lost icons in my lifetime: Pan Am, Gimbels, Altman's, Abraham & Straus, House & Garden, even Waterford (and Wedgwood by extension, since Waterford owns Wedgwood).

Anyone interested in pooling piggy banks and buying Waterford? They are looking for a savior. They last went belly-up in 1851 and didn't revive for 100 years.

Word is that young people aren't buying as many dishes, and don't care about fine china and stemware. Again... sigh.

As Kathy said -- good thing we have beautiful blogs like Mary's to help fill the gap. (No pressure, there, Mary!)

  15. I'm just sick about it. I bought my copy yesterday. I am so sad. I love my magazines; love nothing more than sitting in a comfy chair and losing myself in all the photos and articles. Country Home, Cottage Living and MEHC.

  16. I stopped by from A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words. I too received my last issue and was heart-broken. I don't want Family Circle in place of that....I am going to be canceling unless there is something else they will offer instead. :(

  17. Great minds think alike. I posted on this same subject this morning. I almost can't bear to read it!

  18. ...Oh my gosh! I had no idea! I didn't get the last issue yet and I didn't know that they were even thinking of closing up. I've always been a big fan of that magazine but I do have to admit that I thought their content has been suffering these past few years. Theirs as well as Country Living Magazine which I subscribe to as well...

...Can't wait to receive this issue - I love the old log house!

    ...Blessings... :o)

  19. So many of our magazine friends are gone now. I am so glad we have our bloggie friends willing to share the interiors of their homes. And, I'm glad I've saved a few years of their magazines.

I love that red fabric, too!

  20. Mary, I took many of the same photos to blog about this too. I'm so sad at the loss of many if my favorite magazine this year. I've seen so many new ones come out in publication though, so I guess that is what life is all about in a way.

  22. What a strange co-incidence -- I was sitting here just flipping through my issue of Country House too! I shall miss this magazine dearly -- I have subscribed to it for years and years! And CH always had wonderful decorating ideas, stories on many antiques and collectibles plus wonderful recipes and columns. Very sad!

  24. So many magazines are going away!!!! Is it just the economy or is blog world taking away some of the readers? I am guilty and I feel bad about it! I used to sit and read magazines in the evening but now I love reading blogs.

  25. Yes, I just got this notice on my Country Home magazine yesterday. I was so sad - this was one of my favorite magazines! Cottage Living is also gone...*sob*.

  26. Now I know why I saved all my old Country Livings when James Cramer and Dean Johnson were editors-at-large, then Mr. Cramer was in Country Home and I switched to it. The Fun-spoiler police must be at work, Cottage Living, Country Home and I live in Detroit and my morning Free Press is cut to 3 days a week. Well, let's be hopeful, maybe there will be some we love that will take the place of them. But I'm still keeping my old issues of all these just in case.

  27. I got my notice about Cottage Living a month or so ago...I too, am very disappointed they are discontinuing that magazine. I'll be getting Southern Living instead. It's a good magazine but just not the same.

  28. So sad! I notice alot of magazines are somehow disappearing! I'm so glad I found this blogging medium to get my inspirations.

  29. The loss of so many magazines is beyond sad. Yesterday, I was persusing old magazine issues at the flea market when I realized that I should buy nearly every one. I think I'm going back to do just that today.

  30. I know, I received my last copy and it made me so sad. It was my favorite magazine :(

  31. All the good ones go it seems. I wish I could remember the name of my very favorite magazine that was similar to Country Home - it began in England and then was published here. I got every issue and LOVED it. And then I got my last issue with a similar cover. It was to be no more. I still miss that magazine (and have kept every issue).

  32. That's so sad. It looks like a truly lovely magazine. I ought to go to Frankfurt and whether I can get this issue.

  33. And can you believe they are sending Ladies Home Journal as a substitute? Kinda apples and oranges don't you think??

    Janet

PS: I got the e-mail from BHG and posted about the contest too.

  34. This one upsets me, what a shame for a great magazine to close up shop...and I do hate that they are sending in it's place Family Circle....what does someone 58 need with Family Circle? Sue.

  35. I looked around the publisher's website and think it may not be so much a result of the economy. They are starting a new magazine targeted toward younger consumers.

Guess they think we're done.....or too old.....Too bad they don't realize making one's home isn't age related. I've seen well dressed women in their late 80's in thrift stores looking for something pretty--frum furniture to dishes. Very, very sad.

By the way, they said I'd be getting Better Homes & Gardens.

  36. I was so sad when I read the insert page....I said out loud "Oh, No!" My kids thought I had lost my mind when they discovered it was "only" over a magazine. It's been a welcome addition to my mailbox for many years....it will be sadly missed! But, if we're lucky, maybe it will have the same fate as "Victoria" and come back after a few years' absence! We can only hope!

  37. I am terribly sad about it...CH and Mary Englebreit's Home Companion too...gone.
I have been a CH subscriber for years. It is like saying goodbye to a trusted friend...

  38. Country Home, Domino, and Country Cottage....such good friends and now all passed away. I've been in magazine mourning now for months. Thank goodness for blogs! I'm a lurcher who has been enjoying yours, hope you'll stick around for a while.
