A Garden Romantic

OK, first you need to know that I'm a sucker for enclosed gardens --  anything with a wall, be it stone or brick or wood, and a sense of enclosure.  Isn't this wonderful?  It's one of my favorite local gardens, the Cross Estate Garden.

Just look at this sea of beautiful white anemones.  You have to love anything that spreads with such abandon.

I guess I have a thing for blowsy, too.  Just a little too full, definitely overabundant.  Am I a garden  romantic?  Absolutely.

I have no idea what this flowering shrub is, but it smells wonderful!  And the variegated ground cover below?  Sorry, no idea what that is either.  But isn't it pretty?

So tell me, what is your garden style?  Enclosed or wide open?  Formal or informal?  Regimented or chaos?

Are you a garden romantic?

  1. I am definitely a garden romantic. I prefer the overgrown look over the manicured garden.

And, I love a walled garden. They seem so private and intimate. Like a secret getaway.

    Thank you for sharing, Mary.

  3. Romantic enclosed secret gardens are my dream gardens. I can't stand manicured flowers all in a row. Cottage gardens, hollyhocks and roses, ivy on everything! I love them:>)

  4. It seems we all share a love of this style garden. Sort of mysterious and romantic.

I shudder when I see things planted neatly in rows or all one color separated from another.

  5. I have a hard time narrowing it down. As long as it is well done...I love it!

  7. I like every garden I've ever seen. I think it comes from suffering these New England winters for 25 years;)

  9. Gorgeous! I was hoping you would mention the name of the flowering shrub - we have it growing by our side door :-)Can't think of the name of it - we call it Freckle Face :-) It really does smell divine.

  10. Enclosed, fairly informal, and definitely NOT regimented. My mom used to line up marigolds along her walkways in neat little rows. I always thought they looked so inhibited!

  11. I love the idea of a walled garden - like Mary's "bit of earth" in The Secret Garden :)

I think that flower may be a chokecherry - we have them growing wild along the roads on the Island.

  12. The variagated ground cover is either Torena or Persicaria. Is it painters palette.

I love enclosed gardens, blowsy, and tousled. There is something secure, and comfortable about them.

  15. This is such a wonderful garden Mary, I love to photograph garden benches and seats especially when surrounded by amazing foilage or plants. We have a completely enclosed back garden mostly by trees. bushes and hedges, with a rose, Italian and English cottage section, it's our little secret garden, people are often surprised as the fronts of the homes around here are so open lol. I would love to have a field of just Tulips too. thanks you for sharing these amazing gardens that you visit, happy Wednesday, Kathy. Those anemones are beautiful.

  19. Hi Mary. I prefer an enclosed garden and I lean toward formal. I'm drawn to a manicured look but sure love the cottage / wild flower look too! Thanks for featuring all these garden photographs, today and in previous posts. I love them, too! ~Arleen

  20. I love a lush green woodsy garden. However, lots of flowers are pretty, too, but since woodsy means shady, I plant the flower bed on the side and look at it from the shade.

  24. Oh that's beautiful. I love the anemones! I agree with everyone else, overgrown is better than manicured. I love the cottage garden feeling. I wish I could accompish it without it looking like a bunch of weeds lol. One thing I love about my new (but tiny) backyard is how the fence hedge creates like a wall and makes it very secluded. In fact my post today is about that. I look forward to creating my own little oasis in the back corner.
Thanks for letting us peek inside this garden with you!

  25. I think your flowering shrub is a viburnum. I have two varieties at my house and they smell divine.

  26. I have a large open back yard with all flowers and bushes enclosed inside with edging around. I don't prefer this but HH requested I try to keep everything easier for him to mow around. If I were able now, since someone else mows for us, I would have numerous garden rooms all about. Little places to sit and meditate. Lush and overgrown. Thanks for today's tour.

  28. i love a cottage style garden with secret little hidden places to discover...but a formal garden can be stunning. as long as it is well cared for i think love is the secret ingredient to a wonderful place.

  29. My gardening style is letting whatever comes up around my house do its thing. What's that called? Fortunately, a few of the things that just come up around my house are honeysuckle, huge purple irises, an enormous old rambling rose, and climbing vines of every description. I love gardens like those pictured above, though- with an abundance of private corners for reading and Jane Austenesque romantic revelations.
