Mosaic Monday: Gardening on the Deck

First of all, I want to thank all of you who extended their thoughts and prayers for my in-laws this week. My father-in-law has a terminal cancer, and has managed to survive three years when he was given three months, so at this point we are just hoping for a dignified and pain-free end. My mother-in-law is suffering from dementia, and it is hard to see her retreat further into the darkness of the disease. Your thoughts and prayers are so greatly appreciated.

This has been such a hot and humid few weeks here in my part of New Jersey. Saturday, in particular, was truly awful -- about 96 degrees and super muggy. Yuck. But late Sunday afternoon a thunderstorm rolled through, bringing cooler temperatures in it's wake. We were thrilled to be able to have dinner on the deck, amid the flowers. :)

The purple Angelonia, shown in these mosaics, is one of my favorite annuals to plant. It grows well in our climate, and it's spires of purple or pink or white flowers are always upright and abundant. I'm also loving old-fashioned zinnias this summer, especially as I found some large pots of it at our local supermarket on sale for $1.99 each. :) With the heat, I've been watering every day, and although my basil has been fading, the angelonia and zinnias are still going strong. My dear friend Toni has even been growing tomatoes in pots on her patio, and you should see how tall they've grown! Next year, I'm going to try that for sure. :)

Now let's have some mosaic fun! Here are the instructions:
1. Publish your Mosaic Monday post.
2. Once it is published, click on the title of the post. This will lead you to the static link for your post. The static link is the page with only that post on it. Copy the url from your browser at the top of the page.
3. Paste the url into the appropriate inlinkz box in this post.
4. Type your name in the appropriate inlinkz box in this post.
5. Click on "Enter."
6. Please link back to this Mosaic Monday post so that your readers can find other wonderful mosaics.
That's all there is to it! It's always a good idea to then check and see if your link is working. If you have any questions, feel free to email me: mrcarroll(at)optonline.

  6. I love your zinnias, Mary! I am thinking I need to try them next year as the heat is wilting everything but the verbena! My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I have been through similar circumstances and I know it is not easy! Thanks for hosting...hugs...Debie

  7. Your mosaics are always so very lovely and simply so. It's obvious to me that you are one talented photographer as well!

Mary, you and yours have my prayers. While I don't know the specifics in your family, I certainly deal daily with dementia/Alzheimer's caring for my grandmother. It is wonderful that your father-in-law had extra time...I know something about that as well with my mother...but if now is his time, dignified and pain-free sounds like an excellent prayer.

  8. I have grown Angelonia before in pots and also liked it. We have finally cooled down here and it's quite pleasant.

  9. I'm so happy to be able to join you this week, Mary!

Just this morning I was out shooting Zinnias! I made it a point to get up early and get to a local farm stand by 7:00 am. The rows and rows of them are just gorgeous. You would be in Zinnia heaven : )

I wish Summer would last forever.

The Seasons of our gardens can bring us comfort as the seasons of life evolve. Sorrow & loss become rejoiceing and delight when babies are born; as winter becomes spring.

I hope this season passes gently for you.

  38. Mary such beautiful gentle images of your flowers.
I send prayers and gentle hugs to you and your husband. I pray that your FIL is spared from too much suffering and know that God watches over him.
I understand the difficult journey one has with a parent diganosed with Dimentia as my late mother suffered with that cruel disease. One that I cried many a tear as I said my slow goodbye to her. I became the mother and she the child as you well know.
I will continue to hold you and your precious family in my daily prayers.
    love and light anna

  47. Dear Mary, I am so glad that you were able to eat out on your deck. We don't quite have the porch that we envision, here, yet. Right now, it's small and has victorian posts on it (odd on a federal house.) It is very unfinished BUT has been such a peaceful respite for us - in view of the sweeping lawn that leads down to the pond and the apple trees in the distance. Also, it's shady and a bit cool because it is right next to the lilac hedge. This year, sadly, it has been an uninhabitable wreck because of puppies and the stone work for the walkway and the garden wall. BUT, rejoice with me! Tom has finished the wall and pressured washed the porch and we can sit out there again.

All of this to say that I can completely commiserate with your longing to eat outside. Actually, come to think of it, I just posted a few photos of it (closeup =]). And, wasn't it gorgeous, today????

I will pray for your father in law. What a time this must be.

  48. I am so sorry to hear about your in-laws' health problems. My husband's aunt and uncle are experiencing the same thing, so I have an idea of what you're all going through. I'll keep you all in my prayers.
You're flowers are lovely, especially considering the brutal NJ summer we're having!

  49. What a sad, sad, story about your in-laws! It must be a difficult time for you and your husband as well.
It has been unbearably hot here in Virginia. We set records a few days ago with heat indexes of 115 and 110. Too hot to be on the porch, even with the fan on.

  50. What a lovely mosaic - it belies the hot, humid weather you've been having.
I'm sorry to read about your in-laws' health. This puts you at a time of life that so many of us are experiencing, watching, helping, but sometimes just helpless in the face of disease.
    Thinking of you and yours......

  52. I am very sorry to hear about your in-laws...very difficult I am sure.
Heat makes everything harder to take.
My mother grew up in Ridgewood, NJ, and I remember swimming at a community pond in the summer.....smiles.

  53. Hi Mary, Anne here from England. You and your husband are in my thoughts my dear. I lost my mum last month after a 10 year battle with Alzheimers. It took her from a lively vivacious fun loving woman to someone who could not speak or walk but sat in a chair and ground her teeth all day. I was with her when she died a very peaceful and dignified death at home. I pray that your father in law will have a peaceful end when it is his time. Very hard for him to leave your mother in law with dementia but I pray that he will find peace.
