They're pink, they're frilly, and they're absolutely fabulous. Sometimes they remind me of a 1950's prom dress, full and frothy. This is the first year I have cut my peonies and brought them inside. We had a few days of heavy rain, and I had not staked or supported them, so they were basically in the mud. I have always hated to pilfer the garden to adorn the house, but flattened flowers do not a garden make. So, I cut them, brought them inside, and had a week of wonderful blooms. What more can a girl ask?
I'm actually glad I brought them inside, because we had a humdinger of a storm last night. It started with some thunder, then got very windy. I was sitting near a window, and got a little nervous about the prospect of a blowing branch breaking the window. This is totally unlike me, as I normally love to sit and watch a storm coming. But it was WINDY. We later heard that this particular storm had associated wind gusts of up to 70 mph. Yikes.
Then came the rain. Yes, it was very welcome after a day of 100+ temperatures. Strikes of lightning lit up the night sky. I tried to take some pictures, but it couldn't be done through the window, and when I tried to take some at the open French doors, I merely got soaked.
It was over in about 15 minutes, but the temperature must have dropped 20 degrees, and the air felt cleansed. I love a good storm. How about you?
Hi, Mary. I'm in NJ this morning on Adrienne's computer. She has Comcast! Wow. I love your peonies, they're gorgeous. Ours were a couple of weeks ago so they're all spent now.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't have a storm come through here, though. I think you're much further north than here. It was really hot yesterday when I arrived around dinnertime.
I'm up early because I called home to make sure George is ok. We're leaving for our road trip later this morning. Just wanted to check your blog. Beautiful!
Beautiful peonies...we had the storms, too, but it feels so much better this morning. Glad all is well.
ReplyDeleteYour peonies are lovely. My mom had some when she had a lake cottage in MN. Glad things cooled off for you. I'm way south of you in Coastal GA and no rain yet, and do we need it!
ReplyDeleteGood morning Mary! I love peonies, my mother has a double row of them about 100 feet long coming up her driveway and I used to fill the house with them when they were in bloom. I love thunderstorms, always have. This last one knocked our power out for 3 days , didn't love that! All is well now and it sure made me grateful for the flip of a switch and being able to turn on the faucet:>) Have a geat day, Ihope it stays a bit cooler for you now.
ReplyDeleteThe peonies are beautiful, and they do remind me of a prom dress - or maybe cotton candy. I'm glad you cut some and shared them with us.
ReplyDeleteI hope you didn't have any damage from the storm guts.
Mary, I take it back about the storm. I didn't hear it come through! Karen did, though, and said it was a whopper. What a beautiful morning, though! Just perfect.
ReplyDeleteMary,
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that storm brought come cooler air and the rain! We needed that...
Love your peony shots!

BEAUTIFUL peonies! I never cut my flowers either...I like them in the garden. *Ü* Maybe someday when I have enough for house and garden I'll cut them. lol
ReplyDeleteYour peonies are beautiful Mary. We had a brief thunderstorm last night right about dinner time. I do love storms, when I am safe and cozy inside...
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Penny
Hi Mary,
ReplyDeleteThey do remind me of a prom dress from the fifties! I love a good storm :) Hope your week is going well.
Hugs,
Dena
Oh, me, too, Mary....a good storm just excites me and I feel better when it is raining and storming a little than at any other time. I dearly love the rain.....

I love a good thunderstorm and we used to have some doozies on the shores of Lake Champlain when I was growing up.
ReplyDeleteWe did not get any last night, they passed just north of us, but we *did* get the relief from the humidity. It's just lovely this morning, quite life affirming, really.
Janet
You are so lucky to have peonies, such a pretty flower.
ReplyDeleteMichelle
Mary - THAT'S the storm that I sent......directly from the midwest to you.... with the intention of cooling things down. HA. I'm glad that things are cooler and I'm glad you've cut the peonies and brought them inside.
ReplyDeleteMy MIL doesn't like when I do that because she says I'm bringing ants along for the ride. What price beauty I ask? Peonies are my favorites. They're beautiful, light and slightly spicy scent fills the air. It's heaven!!
I love thunderstorms but I can totally understand the fear of falling timbers. We have a large tree just outside our great room and I have visions of it being blown over onto the room.

I love, love, love Peonies and always cut some to bring inside! They are so pretty and smell wonderful...who can resist?

Gorgeous shade of Peony Mary. I've cut a few for indoor bouquets too. I wish they bloomed all summer long.
ReplyDeleteMine are blooming now too. As always when the peonies bloom we have storms. My two new Shirley Temples are face down in the mud this morning;(
ReplyDeleteI love the color of yours.
You're so right...they do look like a fabulous prom dress. I'm posting a photo of my peonies tomorrow. I wish that they'd bloom all summer!
ReplyDeleteThose peonies are gorgeous!!! I love storms too but we don't get summer storms here. I loved it when I was in Martha's Vineyard 2 years ago and I could hear the thunder in the middle of the night! I think we only get thunder once or twice a year and always in the winter.
ReplyDeletebeautiful!!!!

Came by your blog from Daisy Cottage and I have to say, you completly won me over with your 'about me' section. I agree... I'd much rather be a forest ranger. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos.
After going on a little garden tour today I vowed to plant peonies! Big, ruffly and pink! So pretty.
ReplyDeleteOh those lovely peonies! My daughter had enough to bring some in the house this year and they smelled devine! Hopefully, I'll get a few next year- I always start with such tiny ones. I enjoy a good thunderstorm too but not the wind! Take care, stephanie
ReplyDeleteMary they are such a pretty pink
ReplyDeleteAlison
Those are lovely! I have the same pink peonies right now in my garden. We have also had the heavy rains so I seem to have a puddle of pink peony petals underneath the flowers. Good call to cut some and bring them inside! Wish I had!
ReplyDeleteKady
Oh my peonies are in bloom too, but your photographs are truly spectacular. Karen
ReplyDeleteThey are almost gorgeous enough to eat!
ReplyDeleteThank you Thank you Thank you for sharing!
Amanda:)
