My favorite thrift store always closes for the summer at the end of June. But before they do, they have great markdowns -- 50% last week, and 75% this week. The trick is to get there early and pick up the things you have had your eye on, but thought were too expensive earlier in the year. So here are two things I picked up last week.
Pictured above is a small 3-piece tureen, porcelain with gilt trim. It is signed Wm. Guerin & Co., Limoges, France. It was originally priced at $39. and later marked down to $20. I got it for $10. I suppose I could have left it for this week, and 75% off, but I was worried someone else might snap it up. Of course, I have a real love affair with all lidded china, so I just couldn't resist.
I also bought this vase. I remember reading about similar vases in a magazine, and I thought they were called Bristolware. But when I googled "bristolware," I found tin boxes. So if any one recognizes this, could you give me a shout out? It was marked $25., and I got it for $12.50.
The best thing about this thrift store is that it benefits a school for children with cerebral palsy. In the past year, the store raised $100,000. for the school. And I'm happy to say that I certainly did my part to contribute!
What beautiful pieces! And, you're helping a worthy cause as well ...... cool!

Your two new pieces are lovely. I think it is wonderful to frequent businesses that support worthy causes.
ReplyDeleteWhat great items! I love the tureen, I have seen glass like the vase but I dont what it is called either. Too bad the store closes for the summer, but I bet they open back up in fall just full of more good things.

Hello Mary!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love that vase! What a beautiful color! Is this the thrift store you told me about up by Peapack, that is the church on the corner? Oh, I hope not because this is the one I love to go to!
Great pieces, Mary, and how nice to support a worthy cause!

Donna
Hope that someone can help you out with your beautiful vase...love the soup tureen, too. Great finds and easy to spend money for such a worthy cause. Hope that you may find even more!
ReplyDeleteYour peonies are stunning!! I captured some wonderful photos of my roses last week and put them on my blog and surprised even myself with the photos! I usually end up taking pictures of my toes - for which I am famous for - the pix, not the toes. Well, yes, that too, but that's another story!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, my sweet, anyone married to an attorney and who has heard all the "lawyer jokes" needs an extra hug today so consider yourself "hugged", my sweet little chickadee! Come over and visit with me...we're pretty funny on my blog also.....yikes, I'm telling all my secrets.......

The hunt is the thing. It's so exciting to find these bargains and you've gotten two really great items. I'm especially entranced with the vase because it's so unusual. Sorry, I can't help you identify it but I can help you appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteMary, you have so many lovely pieces. Do you rotate them for seasonal displays? I literally have cabinets, shelves in the basement, bookshelves filled with this thrift store treasures. I need a big butler's pantry.... really bad. Some of this stuff is out of sight and I forget to rotate.
Any suggestions?

Oh lucky you ! The piece of Limoges porcelan dates back from the end of the 19th century and is most probably worth 10 times more than what you paid for it (well in fact I have no idea - but I do know that Limoges porcelan is expensive, so if it dates back from the 19th century...). If you want further information, maybe I can try to find information on the French sites and pass them along to you, translated ?
