My Favorite Things

Ever since I was a little girl, one of my favorite things about autumn was the sound of Canadian geese.  Whenever we heard their loud honking, we would drop whatever we were doing and run outside to see them fly overhead.

I'm going to be lazy today, and ask you to help me.  Will you tell me what your autumn favorites are?  I'd love to hear all about them.  :)

  1. My autumn favorite is the smell of wood burning in fireplaces. And, the orange that some leaves turn. I actually have a favorite autumn tree, and I drive by it as many times as I can during the change.

  2. I love to see the Canda Geese fly overhead! A true sign that fall is almost here. In fact, someone close to our home has some and I don't know how they do it, but they stay here all year long. Maybe we do not get cold enough for them to feel the urge to fly any farther south? Not sure about that.
My very favorite things about fall are the cooler weather and the beautiful foliage. Being surrounded by those wonderful colors makes me feel happy.
    Have a great day!

  3. Walking on crispy leaves and the sound they make. Years ago, we used to burn the leaves and I remember standing in the smoke just to smell the burning leaves.

  4. I love the fall colors. We take long drives in the counrty and on the Blue Ridge Parkway, go hiking in the woods and picnic. Nothing is more beautiful that colorful leaves and a blue sky.

  5. there are so many things i love about fall...the piles of leaves, having a fire in the fireplace, the crisp morning air, the mists over the hills and the rainbow of colors of the leaves as they turn.
    fall is wonderful...plain and simple.

  6. Trees rustling...I grew up in a new development in town that had no mature trees. I'd go to my grandmother's in New Jersel and sit by he 2nd story windows listening to her trees rustles for hours. I swore when I grew up I'd live in a house with rustling trees. And I did, there are 10 sycamores on our front lawn that are over 100 years old...I love to sit out on the porch and hear their rustle...

  10. Here's a poem I wrote about my favorite season...

    Soft Years
    by Cheryl Murphy, OKC

    You call me outside
to see the fire you’ve stoked in the chimanea.
We breathe in the aroma from smoldering embers.

    Your lips are warm
    as the crisp air stings
    around our familiar kiss.

We touch the other’s flannel sleeve
soft with age. This is our season.
We claim it and call it our own.

  11. Hi Mary,
Oh, I have to agree with Beverly. It is the smell of wood burning in the woodstove or fireplace. Such a thick warm fragrance.
    Lovely image,

  13. The Canada Geese truly mark the arrival of fall. However, they have become a real problem in this area. Think thousands and thousands and thousands of geese. Think poop. Yeah, that problem.

  14. Hi Mary...my favorite fall treat is caramel apples. It's the only time of year our local grocery sells them. Fall also means a big pot roast cooking all day in the crockpot with tons of carrots and I get to serve it with rutabaga that is infused with whipping cream, butter and nutmeg...And I love to be out walking the dog on a Friday night and hear the local high school football team and band in the distance...

  17. This is a wonderful post!

I love it when the geese fly at night. The sound of them always takes you by surprise, especially when it's dark.

The sound and smell of the dry leaves ~ Playing with my dogs in the big leaf piles ~ Watching the girls try to catch the leaves as they fall ~ Cool nights and warm days

Honestly, what's not to love about Fall!?!

  18. The sound of the geese.
    The scent of wood burning.
The scent of fresh cut grass.
    Autumn colors.
Leaves falling like a gentle rain.
Pumpkin pie baking in the oven.
    Or apple.
Or any pie, for that matter.

  19. Omigosh, Mary! That is one exquisite photograph. I took a few photographs of gathering geese and none looks like that! There are so many favorites in this season. Right now, I'd have to say that the smell of woodsmoke is my this-very-second's favorite.

  21. What a gorgeous photo, Mary!! Like you, I love the sound of the Canadian Geese. One of the places I worked had a pond and every morning at dawn the geese would fly over to the pond. It was something to look forward to. My favorite thing is the changing of the leaves. It is Mother Nature's way of rejuvination.

  22. Autumn is by far my favorite season. My favorite things about autumn are the softly floating leaves, the varying hues of red, orange and yellow. the bright blue skies, and gentle breezes. The smell of firewood and burning leaves and the hopes of chilly nights to have a fire in the fireplace. Chili and cornbread - my family has a tradition of cooking our first pot of chili on Halloween night. I remember growing up and visiting my grandmother on a tree lined street - i loved to try to catch the falling leaves and swoosh my feet through piles of leaves on the sidewalk. oh i could go on and on...

  23. Love the picture Mary! I too really like to hear the geese flying over head. But I must say that my favorite parts of autumn or the beautiful colors in the trees, our annual trip up the canyon to look at them and the hot mug of apple cider afterwards.
    *hugs*

  24. I must say my autumn favorite is the color of the leaves, and then the smell of wood burning fireplaces. Won't be long until we can get cozy around the fireplace with our hot chocolate!

    Have a great day, Mary!

  26. It's Spring over here now and I've just noticed that my favourite bird is back. I've just written a post on it.

(It's a bit topsy-turvy being in another hemisphere, you are all talking about the weather getting cooler and decorating for fall and here the leaves are coming out and the goslings are hatching in the pond across the road.)

  30. My autumn favorite is to hear and see the grey geese passing here. They are flying south in August so it's still summer, but I feel a little touch of sadness when I hear them.
    I love the autumn colours!
I love the change in the weather all the time. One day is calm, clear and blue, the next there is rain and wind.
I love the smell of autumn when I'm out walking.

    Have a nice week :)

  31. Mary, for me, here in North Texas, it can be shirtsleeve weather up to Thanksgiving, and then a little blast, and some light jacket weather, so we don't get to burn wood until December mostly. I'd say the leaves, the huge Pecans dropping from my trees, the Pyracantha turning from orange to red berries. The long slanted, golden light of fall that is like no other. One sound I will miss this year is our old football stadium was torn down as we have a new larger one, but I will no longer get to hear the announcer or the band playing the school song. I'll miss that.
October and the State Fair of Texas is such fun, November and making my brined turkey and Mom's Southern Cornbread Dressing and "tasting" it the night before. It's a time for taking stock, assessing the year and for just being. I love fall!
