The Chicken Lady

In the past, I have collected roosters with a passion that my kids think incomprehensible.  Their friends loved to count roosters in my kitchen.  I think the high count was somewhere around 23.

Now I seem to be branching out to include chickens in a basket.  I'm not sure how this started.

This rather large one, a sort of Fire King green, is a HomeGoods find.

And this little white lady was a gift from the beautiful BJ, of Sweet Nothings.  I can't remember where I got the one on the right.

Finally, this tiny white one is from my dear friend, Robin.  See, my friends are at least partly to blame for this new collection.  And my kids' friends will soon have something new to count.

And I guess you could call me The Chicken Lady.  :)  Tell me, what do you collect?

  6. I am a milk glass collector! Once, I would look through an antiques shop or on Ebay and think, "Oooh look at that dish/vase/bowl!"

And now, I see milk glass and think, "hmmm, I have that... and that ... and that ..."

Now I need a great place to display it all!

  7. I have a large collection of the white chickens on a nest. I just love them and they seem to travel about my house and land in different areas from time to time. I have one large one, one medium and about 10 small ones. I've gotten them as gifts - from yard sales and antique stores. I don't buy them much anymore as the prices have gone up quite a bit. My best find was the oldest one for 4.00 at a yard sale. I love a bargain.

  8. I LOVE all your chickens, Mary. I, too, posted a few of mine today.
I never ever see a chicken on a nest that I don't think of you...especially if it is in all white.
    Hugs, bj

  9. P.S. How do you post such large and beautiful photos? On my blog, even the LARGE isn't nearly the size of yours!!??

  10. So, Mary, when do you start on eggs? Which I guess answers the age-old question of which came first. . . .

Hmm, maybe you need to give the chickens and the roosters some privacy first.

I love chickens and roosters. I have a nesting chicken that belonged to my grandmother; it's clear, and is now reaching its century mark.

I'd love to have real chickens, but so would my dogs. (And how DO you get such big pictures?)

Rain, stay away! I want to go to the St. Clare's Hospital Thrift store today, in Denville.

  11. I collect roosters, also! Every time my son comes home from college, he heads to the kitchen and dining room to count how many there are now. I just ordered a beautiful rug for my dining room with roosters on it -- wait till he sees that! Joanne ~~ glamourgirljoanne@yahoo.com

  13. Without meaning to, I seem to have a collection of roosters in my kitchen. Funny, because my grandpa had chickens and the roosters scared the bajeebers out of me. But, I guess I love the pretty colors and the fact that they are ceramic makes them non-threatening:)

    I also collect teapots.

  15. Hi Mary,

Your chickens are lovely! They remind me so much of many my mum used to have. We had chickens in our back garden when I was a kid, and my mum had HUNDREDS of chicken things in our kitchen!

I have a feeling if I ever get the house/kitchen/garden of my dreams it will also be full of chickens :-)

  25. The chickens are sweet and they just bring a smile so why not have lot's of them?! I collect anything old. There is just something so irresistible about old things. Old houses, old linens, old pictures. I even have an old husband, but of course I'M not old!

  26. Your chickens in a basket are so cute. Love that green one! I have so many collections, you wouldn't even want to know! And I, like you, often wonder how this collection or that one got started. It seems if I get one of something, my family and friends jump on it and al of a sudden, I have a collection! laurie

  28. Didn't I just see cute little chicken salt and pepper shakers at our Value Village - they would have been perfect for your collection.

And thanks for the photo tutorial - I hope it works in squarespace.
